I'm happy to announce the release of my passion project: Rayman Retaliation!
It's been 2 years on-and-off in the making, which has been a wonderful distraction from the pandemic. However, life is unpredictable and with post-grad, moving and long-term illness this project that was originally going to be a comic was taking much longer than anticipated.
I decided to change it from a fan comic to an illustrated fanfic instead, which became a much easier undertaking for me(didn't want to be having to spend another 2 years or so on this, y'know)! I've also tried my best so that it can be read by people who haven't been following Rayman for 20+ years...
The story includes brand-new fan characters and locations, inspired by the video game Rayman 2.
I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing and illustrating it!

The firefly, who was still hidden in Joe's collar, noticed Joe begin to panic. She inhaled a deep breath, puffed out her chest and flew straight out of the room, much to Joe’s surprise. She darted down the maze of corridors and back to the previous room to see Rayman pre-occupied with fighting Robo-Rayman. The room shook again, causing Robo-Rayman to almost fall through a hole that broke through the floorboards. Rayman tried to kick him back down, but it used it’s helicopter on it’s head to hover back up. It lashed out at Rayman with it’s clawed metal hands.
The firefly noticed Rayman was struggling. With clenched fists, she soared over their heads and landed directly onto the big red button. The pressed button made a clicking noise as it set off a mechanism which lit a long fuse leading to the giant cannon. Robo-Rayman heard the click. It turned to face the firefly sitting on the button and slowly marched towards her. She stared back frozen in terror.
Rayman quickly jumped back and fired at the giant swinging chandelier on the ceiling. The pellets tore through the chain connecting it to the ceiling and it crash landed directly on top of Robo-Rayman. It smashed through the floor and hit every floor on the way down. Rayman was clinging to the wall away from the gaping hole in front of him.
“Firefly!” he yelled out across the room, sounding relieved but excited, “I’m so glad to see you!”
The lit fuse made it way to the cannon and a gigantic cannon ball shot out, the sheer strength of the weapon’s blast pushed the planet back slightly and covered it in a wave of gunpowder smoke. The smoke filled the room as the large window was smashed open.
However, the cannon was collapsing along with the rest of the planet. The cannonball was off target and shot straight past Razorbeard’s escape pod, causing him to spin out of control from the momentum.
They don’t realise this happened as the cloud of smoke obstructed their view. The firefly glowed a bright light and led Rayman out of the dark, smoke-filled room as both of them coughed.
They ran into Joe in the corridor and they all hastily looked for a way out. The power had shut down and all the lights turned off, so the firefly led the way. The crumbling tower began to sway as they made their way for the exit.
“You did it, you stopped the planet from moving! And the cannon went off!” Exclaimed Rayman while panting, “But I don’t know if we hit him.”
“I don’t know either! I couldn’t see with all the smoke, but we don’t have time to double-check, we need to get out of here!”
The ground outside was littered with broken-down Pirates. Towers were collapsing, ruptured pipes spat out hot steam and machine cogs broke off and bounced across the ground as machines broke apart. The imbalance of the world had eventually become too much and everything was falling to pieces.
They hastily made their way towards the alien jungle again to find Joe’s spaceship. They had to quickly navigate the jungle as it caught fire from the chaos. They quickly removed the ship’s heavy disguise and boarded it.
Meanwhile, as the Robot nightmare counterpart was shoved into the ground, he noticed his crumbling surroundings. He realised that the plan was failing. In a last-resort attempt, he drove his remaining energy towards the poles of the planet to kick-start the rocket-propulsion pipes again and drove the planet full speed ahead, to crash into the Glade of Dreams. However, the spirits of the other planets that were rescued by Rayman, had successfully defeated the Pirates on their worlds and were now pulling back at their tethered chains, which prevented the Robot Planet from moving.
The pressure on the exhausts caused them to explode and massive cracks ripped across the surface of the planet, causing chunks of earth and lava to break away from the crust and float away into space.
Joe piloted the spaceship as fast as possible away from the surrounding explosions, darting erratically side to side to avoid any flying shrapnel. The Robot Pirates that survived drove warships to try and escape, but they could not keep up with Joe’s spaceship. As the Robot nightmare guardian crashed and burned, his factory body erupted into an inferno. The blast wave launched Joe’s ship far into space. The three of them screamed their lungs out at the speed they were travelling at.
Back at the Glade of Dreams, the people of the Glade had been keeping a close eye on the Robot Planet since hearing the news from Rayman and Joe. The inhabitants gasped when they saw the distant explosion of the Robot planet that was large enough to see in the day sky. Those who had telescopes quickly announced the incoming spaceship.
Joe’s spaceship had shot through space and crashed through the clouds of the Glade of Dreams at an uncontrollable speed. Clark sprinted over and jumped up to safely catch the spaceship in his giant hands. Since the ship was hot from breaking through the atmosphere, Clark yelped and juggled the ship between his hands, blowing on it to cool it down. The hatch popped open to reveal Rayman, Joe and the firefly together, dizzy and seeing stars. Clark held the spaceship up in the air with one hand and pointed at it with the other as he yelled out for the others to come look. Their friends ran over and cheered at their safe return.
“Congratulations Rayman!” Ly called out from a tree top above their heads, “Glad to see you made it back in one piece this time!”
That evening, fireworks went off in the sky as the people partied and celebrated their victory.
Polokus announced that he had decided he would no longer stay isolated. The spirits of the worlds also decided that they would keep in touch more often as they worked better as a team to better protect their worlds. Some of the spirits and their people whose planets had been destroyed by the Pirates were welcomed to stay at the Glade of Dreams and other worlds.
From the aftermath of the Robot planet explosion, what was left over had broken down back into lums. These lums gathered together in the void of space. Who knows what they were thinking amongst themselves and what they planned to create next...
In the middle of the night, Rayman woke up in a cold sweat.
Rayman was transported to a magical realm. The ground below him no longer crumbled to dust after each footstep and instead was covered in tall grass. The strange but unique alien-like trees and foliage were here, but instead they were now looking strong and healthy. The sky was also clear, with stars dotted in the twilight sky. He inhaled a big breath of the clean air.
Before him stood a stone pedestal. As the sun set, some light broke through the over-head leaves and landed on it, revealing a large robot resting against it. It almost went unnoticed as it was camouflaged with overgrown plant life. The robot looked unlike the Robot Pirates he was used to seeing; it was softer in shape with big round eyes and long limbs. It was rusty, damaged and appeared to be deactivated, with a large dent in the corner of it’s head.
Each side of the pedestal had different shaped holes. Rayman quietly walked up to one side of the pedestal and slid the mask he was holding onto in a slot of a similar shape, and it fit perfectly. The eyes on the mask glowed and the deactivated robot’s eyes flashed on and back off again.
Rayman started to fade away from the realm as little orbs of light danced around him and he reappeared back at the clearing with Joe and the walking shell.
“I’ve found the real Robot world spirit.”
Rayman and Joe quickly shifted through the remaining mask segments in the treasure chest and pieced them together like jigsaw puzzles. Some were more damaged than others, but once the pieces were together, Rayman was able to carry them through to the realm where the Robot spirit lied secluded.
Once the four masks were installed, the true Robot planet spirit was awoken. It slowly raised itself up from the ground and rubbed at it’s dented head.
“Thank you for waking me. Ouch… my head is killing me. I’ve been having the worst nightmares! There was a Robot Pirate armada and everything, can you believe that?”
Rayman raised an eyebrow.
Rayman and the Robot spirit faded away from the realm and appeared at the clearing where Joe was waiting. The spirit stood tall against the two of them. It was still covered in the plants and boasted a large round body with long arms made up of interlocked parts. It had an expressionless metal face with a box-shaped jaw and two round green glass eyes that glittered.
It looked around at the tired looking jungle then out towards the devastation. After a moment of standing in silence, it spoke, not moving it’s gaze from the view.
“Look, Rayman, at what my nightmares have done to my world. A planet of anguish and pain, haunted by evil. A dark place, teeming with fierce monsters... I can’t believe I let my nightmares overwhelm me.”
“H...how do you know my name?” asked Rayman.
"Being a creature that was not dreamed up by any of the spirits is a big deal you know!" It laughed heartily and held out its hand to shake, "My name is Robolokus and I'm very pleased to finally meet you.”
Rayman looked at the large metal hand before him and warmly shook it. A glowing light of energy emitted from its large hand and Rayman’s injuries faded. He felt stronger than ever.
Robolokus looked up to the sky. It extended and adjusted it’s eyes like lenses on a camera. It got a good look at the other planets tethered to this planet. Anger brewed inside it.
“Do you think you can restore this world back to how it was?” responded Rayman.
“The people and the Heart of this world have been long destroyed. But I cannot allow this destruction to keep spreading. We can put a stop to this now that you’ve restored me.”
It looked around more with it’s telescopic vision.
“See what you can do to about the planet moving. I will face my nightmare counterpart: he has been corrupted. Him being the sole deity of this world has upset the balance. The Pirates have stolen all the magic from this world for selfish means. I will use the last of my strength to put a stop to this destruction.”
It grew larger and larger until it towered over the trees. The rust and the plant life that covered it peeled off to reveal a glossy surface. It looked shiny and new as it marched away. The ground shook with each footstep and some of the trees collapsed in the jungle.
Rayman and Joe jumped up and down and cheered for joy. Rayman, now energised with confidence, punched at his fist.
“Time to take Razorbeard down a pegleg!”
The walking shell jumped up and down with excitement, neighing loudly. Suddenly, they could see herds of walking shells galloping in the distance towards them. The walking shells soon burst through the foliage into the clearing with them. They were all rearing and neighing excitedly.
Rayman gasped at the sight.
“They do move in herds”.
Back inside the tower, Razorbeard was demanding the Pirates around him to tell him where Rayman was, but they didn’t know. Suddenly the wide room shuddered. Dust and bits of debris fell from the ceiling. The telescope and chandelier swung around. One of the Pirates collapsed through the weak floor.
Razorbeard started sweating oil and rushed over to the telescope to see what was happening. He turned the telescope to face down below and noticed to his surprise that the real Robot spirit had returned and was marching directly towards the nightmare guardian counterpart.
“No, no, no, no, no…!” choked Razorbeard. He scrambled back through his secret doorway to a different room.
The corridors of the tower were quickly filling up with hundreds of walking shells, which would crash into walls and blow up, causing the tower to shake and walls to break down. The Pirates that patrolled the corridors would get hit and explode from colliding with the shells. Rayman and Joe, both riding on shells, had burst into the room Rayman originally met Razorbeard in, just in time to see him zip past the large window in an escape pod.
“He can’t get away again!” exclaims Rayman, jumping off the walking shell. The walking shell ran on ahead and exploded as it collided with the window, smashing it further.
Joe, still on his walking shell, suggested that if they get to his space ship quickly they might be able to follow behind him.
Rayman thought about this for a moment, but then he saw the pedestal with the big red button in the room.
“That button over there sets off the giant cannon.” explained Rayman, “At least Razorbeard isn't here to activate it anymore, but we still need to stop this planet from moving and crashing into the Glade of Dreams.”
They watched Razorbeard’s escape pod drive away in the distance.
“Oh I know! Maybe we could use the cannon to hit Razorbeard’s escape pod instead! Joe, see if you can find the bridge room to stop this planet-ship from moving and target the cannon at Razorbeard instead.”
“Right!” Responded Joe, “I’ll set off the alarm system to tell you when to hit that button!”
Joe and the other walking shells that were there swiftly left the room to find the bridge of the planet-ship.
Rayman ran towards the red button to prepare, but not before Robo-Rayman flew down before him, blocking the way. Rayman, angry, began to create a huge power pellet in his hands and launched it at Robo-Rayman.
The swarm of walking shells obliterated any Pirates in his path so Joe safely managed to find the bridge and broke into it. The room was cold and empty except for buttons and flashing lights. A low whirr of machinery was the only thing that broke the silence. He quickly grabbed the steering wheel and pulled the brakes and the planet screeched to a halt. Joe messed around with the controls, pulling out wires and having a great time tinkering around with Pirate technology. The cannon was now slowly moving away from aiming at the Glade of Dreams and instead was moving towards the direction of Razorbeard’s escape pod.
“This is probably a little over kill.” Wondered Joe.
Meanwhile, Robo-Rayman was fighting Rayman trying to tie him up with the magic inhibitors again. Rayman pushed back by firing power-pellets at it.
With the cannon locked onto Razorbeard’s escape-pod, Joe set off the alarm to signal Rayman to activate the cannon. The lights went off and strobe lights flashed the rooms red as the claxon rang across the tower again.
The alarm signal was going off for an unnerving amount of time.
Outside, Robolokus had started fighting it’s counterpart. The strength of the two beings would shake the already weakened planet. The rooms in the tower shuddered violently, with dust falling from the ceiling.
“Why hasn’t Rayman fired the cannon yet?” Joe whispered restlessly to his firefly friend hiding in his collar, “I don’t want to still be here when the planet breaks apart!"

Polokus opened up an ancient portal gateway to travel to the place where all the God’s of all the world’s meet to dream up the future together: a grand hall, of beautiful other worldly architecture, that shimmered from the light of the billions of lums that encompass it.
After the Robot Pirate armada invasion which tormented a few different planets at this point, Polokus decided to call an emergency meeting and awaken all the spirits from their secluded slumbers.
Portals opened around the sides of the hall as different spirits all slowly entered from their respective worlds. They seat themselves around a giant table in the centre, where you can see the whole universe from.
The spirits chattered amongst themselves, enthusiastically. Some had not seen each other in a very long time or had never met before. They bounced ideas off of each other about what the future could hold. Colourful orbs emerged from their bodies as they became inspired by the different ideas.
Polokus looked over at the empty seat beside him, sighing. There was nobody for him to look forward to seeing anymore.
Soon enough, a large portal formed in the corner of the hall and a gigantic metallic figure suddenly emerged, looming over them all. The figure was so large that only it's head and upper torso could fit through. Smoke and oil leaked out from the portal the figure emerged from.
“Everyone…” the mysterious figure boomed, pointing a metallic finger directly at Polokus, “Polokus got in the way of the Robot Pirate armada and therefore in the way of my grand plan of taking over the universe. I am here to make sure that his people are wiped from existence!”
The spirits in the hall turned to the figure and gasped in disbelief.
“Since we are here to dream up a new future… I believe that future should be a future of nightmares!”
Suddenly the hall was filled with hundreds of Robot Pirates, spilling out from the portal behind him. Some of the older and more experienced spirits, including Polokus fought back as best as they could, but the abruptness and size of the invading swarm overwhelmed the room. The spirits arms were quickly cuffed together and their dream connections to their worlds shattered. Polokus managed to send out one last dream before he was also captured.
At the Glade of Dreams, our heroes had set up a campsite at a beach by the edge of the woods. They had all been spending their days cleaning up Pirate debris and breaking down their structures, so were having a deserved break. After an evening of partying and music, most headed home leaving Rayman, Clark and Globox to settle down and talk about how long it’ll take to finish their clean-up operation. This carried on until late and they eventually fell asleep.
Rayman, awkwardly sprawled on top of a log by the smouldering campfire, woke up in the middle of the night from a restless sleep. He was feeling troubled but groggy from tiredness. He continued to lie there, head in his hands as he looked across at his friends who were still asleep on the other logs. It put him back at ease knowing they were safe.
He noticed a twinkle in the distance in between the dark trees of the woods. Accepting he was not going to be able to get back to sleep, he got up to take a look and slipped away unnoticed.
He found himself moving through the dark trees for quite a distance. The twinkle came from the head of a Robot Pirate on the forest floor. He picked it up.
“Wow there’s so many of these we have still to clean up” he thought out loud to himself, as he flicked bits of dirt off the head. The stars and the moons were reflected in the glass eye. One of the reflections however appeared to be moving. Rayman turned his head and looked up towards the sky behind him. His eyes widened: Those were undoubtedly Pirate ships in the sky. Suddenly he heard a beeping; he quickly looked back at the beeping Pirate head in his hands. A crusty voice broke through the mouth piece: “Rayman, the Robot Pirates are back!”
Rayman screamed awake, and fell off the log he was on. He had awoken back at the bonfire site, but it was now the morning. Globox and Clark were startled by his scream, but then laughed at him falling on his face.
Globox was half-asleep and lying on his log still but Clark was already up and had been gathering more firewood. After shaking off sand, Rayman angrily threw a power pellet into the new pile of fire-wood, which re-lit the campfire.
“Hey good shot Rayman” Globox muttered as he rubbed his eye, “I guess you had a lot of practice though!”
Rayman said nothing and quietly walked away from the campsite.
“Wait, where are you going, little buddy?” Clark responded, “Not hungry for breakfast first? Got another big day of smashing Pirate machines, gonna need the energy.” He cracked his knuckles enthusiastically.
Rayman, thought quickly for a response, “I just need to stretch my uh...legs.”
He knew Ly the Fairy should be nearby, so he briefly left to find her and tell her about his weird dream that night. It’s not impossible, there was a chance Razorbeard could return since he got away, right?
Most of the people of the Glade were already up and doing their everyday tasks in their towns. Knowing Ly, she would be somewhere away from commotion. He eventually ran into her, meditating in the middle of a stone circle. It was quiet and peaceful in this secluded space, the morning sun glittered through the treetop leaves and danced on the ground around her, as she sat floating crossed-legged, deep in thought. He felt bad about interrupting her.
After explaining the weird dream to Ly, she reassured him not to worry.
“I know you’re concerned Rayman, you haven’t been sleeping well. There’s not much we can do about Razorbeard, but Polokus destroyed his whole army. You’ve restored hope for the people and the spirits are together now and will be dreaming up a new future for us. The best we can do right now is to focus on cleaning up the mess the Pirates left behind. We’re more prepared than we were before.”
Rayman, still kinda concerned about his weird dream, returned to join the others in destroying Pirate infrastructure. He could see Clark breaking down a huge building on top of a hill and ran over to catch up to him. The ground shook violently beneath his feet as he got closer. At first Rayman joked to Clark about all the noise he’s making, but it wasn’t him causing it.
The ground shook more and a giant crack ripped through the hill they were on. Nightmares, including zombie-chickens and caterpillars crawled out of the crack.
Anyway here is Joe the alien reimagined for my story!
I wanted to try and capture a more R2 look with him.
(I'm gonna share more of my sketches/concept art when I've finished uploading the fic, but sharing this early felt appropriate since it's no longer a comic)
When we weren’t playing Animal Crossing, Ikke and I had been working on a few little drawings and animations while together in the first lockdown in 2020. We were stuck in a flat together, Ikke was also in another country and I became really ill, so the story definitely had it's roots in feeling helpless and isolated. This wasn’t intended, but it’s obvious now that I’m looking back at the old notes...
(Some drawings in this post will be done by @ikkeforeal)
Please don't read ahead if you haven't read the story! (contains spoilers!)
< Start reading story here
Campsite sketch.
I originally wanted the first chapter's illustration to be based on this scene but it felt boring.
Rayman was originally going to be paranoid about Razorbeard getting away and having nightmares. He would come across a left over Robot Pirate head during a clean-up operation and look into the night sky, realising how little they knew about the outside world and where the Pirates even came from. This would make him feel small and helpless in protecting the Glade of Dreams.
Rayman with Robot Pirate head.
This was eventually changed as it didn’t feel accurate to his character and instead became a dream that was planted in his head as a warning.
The character Morgan was originally going to be a bigger part of the story. She was someone that had been isolated from the rest of the world. A dark event happened that only she could recall, which was going to be a mysterious and all-consuming creature called The Hunger. Polokus had done a “windows reboot on the world” (as we called it) and paused time so then the mysterious creature was trapped and couldn’t continue. This was connected to him travelling to the Place where all the God’s meet to dream up a new future.
Morgan design and The Hunger.
Morgan was unhappy about the idea of the people not remembering the old world and wanted a real solution to defeating The Hunger.
Rayman was interested in gaining new powers so he could become stronger and Morgan needed him to fight new guardians and gather their masks for her. So she gave him the ability to create spiral doorways and to be able to travel anywhere he needed to be.
The reader was going to be lead in believing that Morgan was going to double-cross Rayman and have him summon The Hunger into the world instead using the masks.
A couple Mask designs.
When the story developed further, I realised that Morgan was going to have to be scrapped and replaced with the Muse of The Poets instead, especially so her connection to Polokus made more sense. This decision made us feel a bit sad because we really liked her as a character, so we decided to keep her as our own version of the Muse of the Poets instead.
The sketch for Chapter 4's final illustration.
Getting Rayman into space was something that we were interested in as then he would be completely in unknown territory. But it was difficult to give him a reason *why* he should go into space and how. The original plan would be to have Rayman pilot an abandoned Pirate warship, but we didn’t want Rayman to be on his own. We decided it would be funny if we brought back Joe the alien from the first game, but also because then we could have a character that would be familiar with navigating space.
Joe the alien re-design. Wanted to give him a more "Rayman 2" look.
In 2021 I ended up deciding to take over the story just on my own since our living situation changed and our lives became busy again, but Ikke was still a big help.
I was stuck with what The Hunger was supposed to be. It didn’t make sense to have a character that had no motivation. If this story was going to be based around the events of Rayman 2, I realised that it could have a connection to the Robot Pirates in some way.
The Robot Pirate "Spirit" sketches.
I then had the idea that it could be the Robot Pirate God that was out for revenge on Polokus for wiping out the Pirates. I really liked this idea and ended up having to rewrite the whole story! (I think it worked out in the end though!)
The Robot Pirate Planet doodles and chapter 3's final illustration sketch.
I could go on and on about every thought I had trying to piece the story together so it made sense but then we’d be here all day. I’m thankful for my friends who encouraged me to keep going.
I decided since the Robot Pirates were going to have a spirit, then that meant they needed their version of Jano. This made for a great idea for the twist in the story.
Robot God design and chapter 6's final illustration sketches.
Ultimately, I really wanted the story to be enjoyed by fans and also able to be read by anyone. I asked my flatmate who isn’t a Rayman fan to proof-read for me and her being able to understand what was going on gave me a lot of confidence for the story.
Sketches for chapter 2's final illustration.
Sketches for chapter 5's final illustration.
Murphy was originally going to be the narrator for the story. I really liked the idea of him being able to break the fourth wall and interact with the comic panels but I had to scrap him when it became a short story instead.
Murphy as a narrator.
Robo-Rayman design.
Old cover designs.
Dang only allowed 30 images per post? Well then. Guess that's all you're getting!!!! :')
Thanks for reading! I'm (probably) never writing a fanfic again, my fingers have crumbled into dust.
