So random 1999 The Mummy theory. Evie is cursed with bad luck, Rick is blessed with good luck and they cancel each other out.
The most important part that I want to highlight is that they CANCEL each other out, not BALANCE, CANCEL.
Now the best example of Evelyn’s bad luck is the library scene. I mean in less than a second she singlehandedly managed to completely destroy her place of work. This followed by the curator’s response of calling her a disaster implies that she had caused similar catastrophes in the past.
As for Rick’s good luck, frankly his uncanny ability to survive no win situations is proof enough. But to give some specific examples: after he first found Hamunaptra Ardeth Bey and the other Medjai were willing to let him go under the assumption that he would die in the desert which by all intents and purposes he probably should have and yet he survived, later when he is set to be hanged in the prison he is lucky enough that his neck doesn’t immediately snap which keeps him alive long enough for Evie to convince the warden to let him go, and finally when Imhotep sets his horde after Rick, Jonathan, Ardeth Bey, and the curator they just happen to have a manhole ready for them to escape.
Now as for why the good luck and bad luck cancel each other out: it only seems to be in affect when they are a certain distance apart from each other. In the prison and when the horde descended on Rick and the others Evelyn was either fairly far away from Rick, or in the latter case, no where near at all. Meanwhile it practically seems as though every time throughout the film that Rick is even so much as in another room Evie finds herself cornered by Imhotep or the Medjai.
However whenever both of them are together everything seems to just happen normally without any luck seemingly in either direction.
