The gang always got a kick out of seeing big serious Darry getting scolded by his momma while looking down like a dog that did something it wasn't supposed to

THIS THIS THISSS like you know after every one of darry’s football games she rushed him and pinched his cheeks while telling him how good he was. she did the same thing to soda after his rodeos and pony after his track meets. pony was the only one who was ever all “ugh, mom, knock it off!”. he regrets it a bunch now. but oh my god yes—mrs curtis lives her sins to death (literally), but that doesn’t mean she won’t scold them. i have a headcanon that dally and darry got into some trouble (ngl darry probably took the fall for dally, much to the latter’s chagrin), and mrs curtis was scolding darry, all the while dally was snickering. she just turned to him with That Look and was like “you wanna be next?” and he just raised his hands all “no ma’am”. that was one of the only times darry saw dally actually scared, despite him looking so cool and collected at the time, lmao.

i honestly think it took them a while to process everything—i know from experience that life feels super like…not real after a death, but i’ve never experienced something as tragic as a parental death. but i can only imagine how unreal everything felt.

darry being thrust into a guardian role without so much as a warning is tragic; needing to arrange funerals and wakes that he never imagined arranging, having to figure out how he was gonna pay for that along with things like bills, food money…i think darry just immediately buried himself in that, and figuring out where he was gonna work. he didn’t really take the time to grieve. he didn’t want to. he needs to be proactive or he’s scared of what’ll happen when he lets himself grieve. maybe he’s afraid of feeling emotions that heavy. maybe he’s afraid of needing to accept they’re gone. who knows?

i think soda was similar, in a way—but instead of burying himself in work, he buried himself in comforting his brothers. holding an inconsolable pony, even after he stopped crying, trying to urge darry to take a break and focus on himself (and earning quite a snap in return, but soda wasn’t mad…how could he be?), he’ll, even confirming the gang when they wanted nothing more than to comfort him. comforting others both helps him forget and it makes him feel needed. he feels like he took the time to grieve, but sometimes, the grief gets so bad he can’t even gut up for work anymore. the day after though, i think he’d just want to comfort everyone else.

pony was switching between bawling his eyes out and just being stagnant. one minute, he’s bawling until he feels sick, and the next, he’s just laying there. motionless. he needs to actually sit down and grieve—and honestly? him being 13 and facing such a tragedy is one in and of itself. but he needs to just wallow in his grief for a while. it’s part of why it’s difficult for him and darry to get along—darry can’t understand why pony needs to wallow instead of just “being fine” like he was. but i think pony just needs to feel. and obviously, he writes about it. i think he’d write stories—allegories, maybe. stuff like ducklings who got separated from their families. it’s how he expressed his grief and his fear of being taken away from darry. he also tries to just blame someone. maybe if he had said something when he got that gut feeling that something bad would happen, they’d still be there. he can’t accept that things are just over, he constantly spirals into the “what ifs” and “why nots”.

One time the boys were out fishin or doing whatever and Steve was just hanging off the boat literally all green. Soda had to get him off and laugh at him a bit while puking in the bushes/hj

like when soda’s driving gum home, he’ll look over and see steve clutching his stomach and swallowing repeatedly. soda just asks if they need to pull over and he holds steve’s hair back while he pukes. he hates boats though. he loves swimming, hates boats. he loves fishing, but he hates boats. it also doesn’t help that i headcanon steve’s emetophobic and will stop at nothing if it means he won’t vomit. so he’s either feelin-g sick and miserable or he’s vomiting and terrified. no in betweens.

ponyboy ends up going out of state too—not too far. maybe arizona—i can see him in arizona. the idea of pony dropping out of college due to financial issues interests me though. he got through one year before deciding that 1. it was a lot of pressure as a freshly 17 year old and 2. he missed his brothers way too much and he knew darry was working harder than he should’ve been just so he could stay in college. after he dropped out, i think that’s when he would publish his outsiders book, with it becoming decently successful. maybe he even gets invited to do some speeches at schools to talk about his life and such. a few years after the success of his book, when he has the money to go to college (and after much insistence from darry that he didn’t need any of pony’s money and that pony should use it to go back to college), pony goes back and gets a degree in psychology and art. he becomes an art therapist. i think pony would want to help people who need the help he once did while also keeping in touch with his more artistic side. and besides, pony’s always known that not all stories need words to be told, so i think art/muisc therapy would be beneficial for him.

in my heart, steve and soda move out together at 19–steve takes a gap year before college, and him and soda arranged to move out together. steve ends up going to school out of state (i’ve said new york in the past, lmao) while him and soda live in an apartment together. maybe steve even goes to community college for two years so he can continue saving up moves before transferring to a different school. i headcanon he wants to be a nurse (he had to do community service as a punishment for some stupid crimes and he worked at a nursing home during that time. he likes it because he didn’t feel the need to be “tough”. he could be himself. the residents just knew him as steve, not steve the greaser who gets into trouble and has anger issues. so that’s why he wanted to go into it) and that soda wants to open a therapy horse ranch. regardless, they end up living together because they’re the best boyfriends ever and i love them. they end up living on a little farm together. soda gets his horse ranch and steve gets to persue nursing.

it’s so so so important to me that darry ends up being the only curtis brother to stay in tulsa as a cruel twist of fate—the one who was supposed to anne it out, who was going to make it out, gets chained and tethered to tulsa. he tries to tell himself he doesn’t mind, but he hates it. he hates it more than anything, but he can’t bear the thought of leaving either. that would mean selling the house—ridding himself of the memories he had, the childhood he had, his parents, his brothers. sure, some ugly things happened in tulsa, but he can’t leave now. he continues with his roofing job for a few years until the second time pony goes to college, where he quits and decides to just stick to being a daycare worker. he feels more useful doing that, anyway. plus i think exploring male daycare workers can be so interesting, especially with darry. but darry stays in tulsa. he stays and howls his brothers know they’re always welcome home, even if they live in three different stages now.
