Steve Henson, the creator of Hidden Valley Ranch, was a skilled plumber turned entrepreneur. In the 1950s, while working as a contractor in Alaska, Henson perfected a creamy herb and spice dressing to please his crew. Later, he and his wife Gayle bought a ranch in California's Santa Barbara County, naming it Hidden Valley Ranch. There, they served the dressing to guests, and it quickly gained popularity. Recognizing its potential, Henson began selling packets of the dry seasoning mix by mail order, which eventually became the iconic Hidden Valley Ranch dressing, now a staple in households across America. And he was a BLACK MAN.

So I was working what was essentially a swing shift as a cashier at the local Kmart when an elderly gentleman came through my line. I was the only register open and the store was pretty dead that night so I was happy to be able to talk to this customer as I rang up his items. As his payment was processing he asked me if I was married/dating anyone and at the time I wasn’t. Then he said, “did you know that all the dating advice you need is on a bottle of ranch dressing?” and of course I said no then asked him what they say. He replied with “keep cool and don’t freeze” then took his bags and with a wink strode out of the store.
