The Rákóczi (older spelling Rákóczy) were a Hungarian noble family in the Kingdom of Hungary (to be precise in Transylvania, which was part of Hungary until 17th August 1916) between the 13th century and 18th century.

The family originated from the Bogátradvány clan which had Bohemian roots. The foundations for the family's wealth and power were laid down by Sigismund Rákóczi; some decades into the 17th century, the Rákóczis became the wealthiest aristocrats of Hungary.

Bonus: One of the Rakoczy has also married a woman called Sophia Bathory, what a familiar surname!
