only when his emotions become "wild" is it really obvious that he is a mutant and that's really part of the point. people forget a lot of the time poc are viewed in a very specific manner and to be anything other than clear headed calm and rational often gets poc men branded as 'aggressive' or 'scary' (white women tears, anyone?). i like using intersectionality of real-world & the fictional racism to make a point with raj. indians/south asians are often viewed as either "extremely intelligent" to the point of being asexual (via the model minority stereotype) beings or as "aggressive" (specifically for south asian men/mascs). his powers tends to "spike" only when he's scared. a biological defense mechanism, if you will, but because it "looks" scary, and he could "potentially" hurt people; that's why he gets targeted.
