What constitutes "teasing" a dog?
The general definition of âteasingâ according to Dictionary.com is: âto make fun of or attempt to provoke (a person or animal) in a playful way.â
I think it applies pretty directly to animals. If youâre trying to purposefully provoke an animal but donât wish them active harm or anything negative, thatâs teasing them. Now, thatâs not necessarily bad if and only if itâs part of play and the animal doesnât find it aversive (e.g. you can tease a dog with a toy to get them a little riled up before throwing it for them - as long as the dog isnât frustrated by not having access to the toy, doesnât get overly aroused by the situation, and acts in a way that indicates itâs genuinely part of a positive play experience). Itâs also worth keeping in mind that a lot of the ways we make fun of animals does turn into teasing, because weâre doing things we find funny to get a reaction out of them.Â
