April 8, 2025—This weekend, cadets participated in field training exercises (FTX). Commissioning-track cadets spent time on and off post. Army ROTC spent the weekend training at the Goshen Boy Scout Camp, while Naval ROTC Marines stayed at Sadler Farm in Rockbridge County for training. Air Force ROTC invited other schools to utilize VMI’s obstacle courses and the Leadership Reaction Course. Navy ROTC cadets trained at Smith Mountain Lake, while the Coast Guard AUP traveled to Maryland for training. Non-commissioning cadets participated in community service activities in the Lexington area, including the Community Table for the Rockbridge Area, the SPCA, Lime Kiln Theater, and the Special Olympics hosted here on post.—VMI Photos by H. Nov. 10, 2024—VMI celebrated 185 years of traditions, disciplined training, and founding principles with a parade and 13-gun salute on Friday. Gary Sinise, actor, director, producer, musician, and advocate for service members and veterans, addressed the Corps. He then joined Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Dec. 19, 2024—Families and friends gathered to witness 38 cadets cross the stage to receive their diplomas during the commencement ceremony this morning. Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins '85 introduced the keynote speaker, Maj. Gen. James “Pat” Work, commanding general for the 82nd Airborne Division. Work offered the graduates perspectives on leadership that he has discovered during his 29 years of soldiering. Afterward cadets received their diplomas.—VMI Photos by Kelly Nye.

Dec. 19, 2024—The December Commissioning Ceremony was held in Memorial Hall, Wednesday, Dec. 18, in which two graduating cadets, Jarrett Taylor Herndon ’24 and Joseph Matthew Slezak ’24, commissioned into the U.S. Army as second lieutenants. Offering remarks and administering the oath of office was Col. Joe Hansen, professor of military science at VMI’s Army ROTC unit.—VMI Photos by H. Lockwood McLaughlin.

Dec. 13, 2024—Gov. Glenn Youngkin paid a holiday visit to post on the last day of fall semester classes. Following a meeting with Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins '85, Youngkin ate lunch in Crozet Hall with the Corps of Cadets, who gave him a rousing standing ovation as he walked in the door. He then told cadets, "...this is a moment for me to relieve those distractions that might keep you from doing your very best this week, because I want ‘A’s on every paper and on every test, and therefore, by the power vested in me as governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia and commander in chief of the Corps of Cadets, I do grant amnesty to those cadets who have unserved duties and commitments," he declared to a cacophony of cheers, applause and table banging.—VMI Photos by Kelly Nye.

Sept. 23, 2024—A POW/MIA Chair of Honor was dedicated by Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins '85; Jamaal Walton '07; and Jimmy Eubanks, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam as part of the 173rd Airborne, in Foster Stadium before the football game against Norfolk State Saturday. The dedication took place the day after National POW/MIA Recognition Day, which is the third Friday of September. These chairs are found all over the United States in stadiums, arenas, and government buildings. They are meant to represent those service members who are unable to fill them because of their sacrifices. They also serve as a tribute to the men and women who serve the country every day.—VMI Photos by Kelly Nye.

April 22, 2024—Col. Jimmy Coale, department head of human performance and wellness; Col. John Brodie, music director; Col. Dick Rowe, professor of biology; and Col. Jon-Michael Hardin, department head of mechanical engineering, joined Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins ’85, superintendent, to take review of the Corps of Cadets during the retirement parade on Friday.
