Just out of curiosity is there any early concept sketches of pearl being based off of bismuth or peri? Love the design for her based off of lapis btw, it looks really cool!
All of the concepts were based on Lapis as a primary focus. I have always intended for her to be Lapis’s Pearl per se. In my opinion, narratively it made the most direct sense for her to be so in contrast to how in the film she was Greg’s. Taking into account the individual character motivations, relationships, and interpretations of the situation that contributed to their eventual conclusion of this scene it seemed the most natural direction to take it. The main thing I wanted to get across with the design was to have her look complimentary to Lapis’s without being too overpowering. I think I failed a bit on, considering Lapis’s very humble appearance in comparison to Pearl’s delicate one.
But each one of the pearls has a very similar if not directly influenced design from their ‘owner’ so I wanted Lapis to shine through in Pearls.
