I'm cisindigenous, and I went to a big urban high school where most of the students were Black. I was the only indigenous student there (to my knowledge). I had to sit in class and be taught racist lies about indigenous people, and then be bullied after school, and I had absolutely no indigenous community to fall back on.

Meanwhile, I saw how my Black classmates were treated even worse than I was, but they didn't break the way that I did. They had the rest of the Black community there to support them. There were Black student organizations, and outside of school there were Black churches and other resources that supported Black students.

I was alone and I was hated, and I wished that I had the kind of community that my Black classmates had. If the word "trace" had been around then, I would've identified with it.

I didn't identify as transBlack because I didn't respect cisBlack people, or because I thought Black culture was cool, or anything antis might tell you about transBlack people. I identified that way because I was suffering.
