They, like all goblins, have grey skin, though they have a seemingly perpetual sunburn on their nose and long, pointed ears. Hathaway has only one leg, having lost their other one some time ago. Despite this, they move more gracefully than most when they want, though they generally feign helplessness.
Hathaway is a smooth-talking con artist, a pick pocket, and a thief. They speak, and act, in an overly theatrical manner and have a great love of stories.
“Well?” they then asked of Garland. “Ten gold pieces for your life?”
“Yes.” Garland said. “It’s a deal.” The goblin clapped their hands together.
“Splendid! You all have made such a marvelous choice here today, giving up gold rather than your lives, and giving it up for a great cause. To line the pockets of Hathaway the Great.” they said, and Thea remembered them suddenly.
“It’s the goblin that tried to steal from you in that little village!” Thea exclaimed to Kane. Radach put a hand on her shoulder and shushed her, and Thea apologized. Kane furrowed her brow, before recognition dawned on her face as well.
“So it is.” was all she said. Hathaway was still busily speaking to their companions, and didn’t seem to notice Thea’s outburst. At last, they turned back.
“Well then, my lovely new benefactors, come out from behind that pitiful cover of brush and let’s speak with my friends like civilized beings.” they said. Radach scoffed. Carefully, both Garland and Kane rose from behind the brush. Thea attempted to follow their lead, but Kane held her back.
“Stay behind us, stay low.” she instructed. Thea nodded and did so, as did Radach. One of the other goblins, stocky and brandishing a sword, pointed to the now completely visible Kane and Garland. She spoke in her own language, then stopped, and Hathaway translated.
“She wants to know just where it is you are going, and just why it is that you stopped here in the first place.” they said.
“We were just passing by, and saw this-” Garland began, but was interrupted by Hathaway.
“Passing by to go where?” they asked. “Her question was ‘where are you going’ and she’ll be very displeased if you don’t answer her plainly.” they paused for a second, before adding, “She’s rarely ever not displeased, if I can be perfectly candid with you. It may be wise to choose your words carefully.”
“Enough of this.” Kane said, and Thea tensed as she did so, assuming that she was ready to fight all of the goblins herself. “I am Kane, a witch hunter. I’m going past The Spears to kill the Witch of the Dunes. She’s responsible for this. Tell your leader she can either let us be on our way, or face me.” Garland sighed heavily, but said nothing. Hathaway appeared delighted, and translated what Kane had said to their leader. The goblin’s eyes opened wide as they did. She spoke in her language again, directly to Kane this time, and furiously motioned to the corpses on the ground.
“She says- and it’s a very good point- that no witch, certainly not one that lives beyond The Spears, would have done this. This was done by human hands.” they said.
“Jym.” Garland said. “The man who did this is named Jym. He was one of mine. He made a deal with the witch.” Hathaway looked less pleased with this information, and seemed to hesitate translating it to their leader. Suddenly, their leader pointed her sword at Garland and barked an order. Every bow and blade now turned in his direction.
“Well, now she’s very displeased with you both.” Hathaway said. “That was quite a bad idea, on your part, revealing that.” Frustrated, Thea walked closer, right next to Garland.
“Please, we just want to stop the witch!” she said. “Jym was a member of the Riders, but he betrayed them. We just want to make things right.” Hathaway cocked their head curiously to the side, before their eyes opened wide in recognition.
“It’s you two!” they said. “You broke my favorite walking stick!” The goblin leader, as well as the others behind her, seemed to be unnerved by this outburst.
“Is that really important right now?” Thea asked, suddenly more nervous.
“We’ll give you twenty gold coins to just forget about it.” Garland said. Kane grunted, but didn’t object. Hathaway seemed to consider this, then nodded.
