I think there's something really special that comes out with Rackam and Danchou's relationship here- he does this on several occasions, actually, where he pulls the captain aside and quietly asks for their help. He's one of the first - and few - members to take them seriously in their position as captain, rather than addressing them as a child in an adult's position

he does it again here (shadowverse collab) since he's genuinely worried about the kids, but understands that it is not his job to look after the crew in that way- he takes care of the ship, captain takes care of the crew (at least, he likes to pretend it's that way)

'getting to talk with you really cleared my mind' = 'thank you for understanding my anxieties and fears without it being a big deal' ?????*????*

'they're waiting for you' = 'I'm not as important as you. This is how the relationship between us works, right?'

danchou and rackam do that a lot. 'but still, I'm the helmsman of this crew. Your crew.' = our jobs and responsibilities are so intertwined that its almost impossible to avoid you. why is that? why do you follow me around?

uhhh uh oh. oh dear. okay. you're asking me to choose??

I think, ultimately, it's his kindness. When we first meet Rackam (all the way back in chapter 2 of MSQ) he's a little abrasive, a little standoffish, but he's going out of his way to help people he just met, as he watched them crash land into Port Breeze??

We see it come up again and again throughout the main quest- he's rough, he can be a bit unserious, but he is ALWAYS kind. With Lyria, with Io, with danchou- that's what really draws me into his character and his motivations ^^;
