Went out to Snelling, California today (yeah I had to look that place up also) to race today. Tons of people out today with over 850 registered to race today.
I’m sure it had nothing to do with Chris Horner racing the P1/2.
I carpooled with my buddies to the race and while picking up my bib number I ran into Sean of Racerim! I’m like dude, I race your wheels. When he saw my bike he knew who I was.
We chatted it up, I introduced him to my buddies and now they are considering buying their next wheelset from him as well. Rad!
So I lined up for my race and looked around and saw a bunch different faces than my previous races as I had upgraded earlier in the week.
Whistle blew and we had a neutral start. For the first lap the group took it easy at 32km/h. But with a full pack of 70 racers it was a tight fit on the road. This would totally kill me later.
Halfway through the first lap we were neutralized as Horner and the rest of the P1/2 field passed us by. After given the green light I decided to stretch my legs and road off the front for a bit.
However after the first hill I filtered to the middle of the pack. Noting that the roads were filled with holes and loose gravel which made for a bumpy race.
Coupled with the sold out race it made it hard for me to filter up especially on the rollers where I would be caught behind guys that struggled to climb which caused me to slow down as well.
Tried my best to navigate around but I was also with guys that couldn’t hold a their line and dealing with teams that didn’t want anyone getting in front of them.
I figured my best bet would be to attack on the last corner to the finish. So I hung mid pack and waited it out.
By the 3rd lap a break formed leaving me off the front. Not wanting that break to stick I attacked as well, bringing the rest of the group behind me to shut it down.
So for the rest of the race we were all very cozy riding shoulder to shoulder, wheel to wheel.
Last lap, I put my plan into action. Staying mid pack counting and slowly moving forward and getting closer to setting off my plan. I see the 2nd to last corner and thinking let’s do this.
As we exit the corner I see a bunch of people sprinting. I’m like WTF? Then to the right I see the 200m sign.
FREAK I counted wrong!!!!!!!!
I so suck at this.
