#50Years Ago This Week: H. Pierson Mapes (driving his 1912 Hudson Raceabout) shakes the hand of Ramapo Supervisor John McAlevey at the opening of the 4th Street Bridge. Excerpt from The Journal News, week of August 28 - September 3, 1967 Photo by Al Witt Mapes, President of the Ramapo Land Co., was supposed to drive Mayor Lester Lepori over the 4th St. Bridge in his 1912 Hudson Raceabout to celebrate its re-opening. However, the car, called the "mile-a-minute" wouldn't start When the car finally reacted, the Raceabout had to settle for 10th or 11th place in the list of cars across the bridge and carried Supervisor John McAlevey. After seven years of effort and more than two years of off and on construction, Hillburn formally opened the 4th Street Bridge in 1967. When Hillburn Mayor Lester LePori cut the ribbon, opening the $500,000 span that bridged the Erie Lackawanna tracks and eliminated the grade crossing, it marked the first time Hillburn residents had direct access to the village. As LePori stood on the bridge, under threatening skies and over the noise of passing Erie freights, he said the bridge was “the fulfillment of a dream and the beginning of a new era for Hillburn. There will be no more delays getting home.” _______________________ The HSRC is pleased to be compiling “This Week in Rockland” a weekly feature appearing in the Rockland Review.
