R002:0215 bunker inversion : concept sketches (1/8) We plan to use the precast bunker wall panel as a jumping-off point for our at-scale construction idea. By flipping the usual profile, and allowing the wall to bend, the normally unyielding concrete wall has two potential states. Unstressed, it can act like a freestanding roof. Stressed, it can collapse onto itself and create an emergent shelter. The game of war, and other conflict, is then less about winning, and more about losing gracefully.
The rapid assembly process of the concrete bunker panel is still useful in this situation, so we translated that into a construction process with as few mold variations as possible. This meant that, if we wanted the wall to take different forms and bend, we needed to find the best and most scale-able geometric pattern (sketches on bottom right).
