Hello!! I’m super interested in quilting, any tips for beginners?
hey there ! I am v much a beginner myself! I genuinely winged the whole thing and most professional quilters/people who actually know how to quilt would be horrified😅😂
I just found the easiest quilting vid on YouTube, bought some fabric online, chose a 'square' size, laid the patterns out in the arrangement i wanted and then sewed the squares tg according to that. then i decided i wanted it to be thicker so got some upholstery to lay in between the stitched squares and the backing (an old bedsheet) before combining.
Other than that tips I have and plan to use myself are:
don't immediately jump to buying new fabric - see what's lying around the house e.g. old clothes . I used old bedsheets to back my first 2 quilts & my next quilt is gonna be made from old dresses that belonged to me/mum/sisters
maybe use a sewing machine if u've got one - hand-sewing was fun but took a huge toll on my back and fingers (at least use a thimble!) i dont know how to use a machine but plan to get help for my next quilt bc there's just no time!
lay out and take a pic of the square arrangement/pattern you want before u start so you can plan a nice/non-repetitive look that you won't forget/screw up
pins were essential for me, especially at the end when bringing it all tg- maybe invest in some
I hope this helps, #quiltasks tag on my blog may have more info/specifics - dms are always open!
