So, I saw THIS post by @deluminatorillustrator about how Ron and Hermione named their children boring, ordinary names, and I don’t like to add on to other people’s posts so I just decided to make my own.
You’re telling me she didn’t insist on weird ancient author names? You’re telling me RON WEASLEY, someone who spent his whole life worried he was plain and easily forgotten, would want to name his kids the most boring, normal names in history?? You’re telling me he never noticed the names were eerily similar to his and Hermione’s and never made a thousand jokes about this??
I’ve seen a lot of people think that Hugo is named after Victor Hugo and I definitely agree with that! While fairly normal, I feel like the other options might have been Nathaniel (Hawthorne), Charles (Dickens), Roald (Dahl), and Aldous (Huxley) -- except Charles is his uncle’s name, Roald is too close to Ronald, and Aldous sounds too much like his cousin Albus. So between Hugo and Nathaniel, it ultimately came down to preference.
As for Rose, I think that it’s actually a nickname for Rosalind--a name that, like Hermione, is a Shakespearean heroine. I think that Rosalind was chosen instead of another character with a more outlandish name like Calpurnia or Goneril was to avoid teasing at muggle primary school since Hermione lived through that.
I think that they only noticed the similarity to their own names well into Hugo’s infancy--like, waking up in a cold sweat-type realization. But once they did notice, it was a constant stream of jokes.
