COMING JULY 6TH - A NEW QUEER WESTERN ROMANCE!!
This is so deeply surreal to share, but Desperate Hollow, the queer romance western that I've been working on for the last eight years, is finally going to be something you can actually read. I'm trying a totally new-to-me thing - releasing it chapter by chapter on the @atypicalartists Patreon. Sign up for free now to read the first five chapters (which will be available for everyone) as they come out!
But more importantly, LOOK AT THIS ART BY NOAH DAO!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!! THEY'RE SO GORGEOUS!!!
If you don't see this art and immediately want to know who these men are, you are a stronger person than I but also I should tell you a bit about the story.
Seven years after a near-fatal argument, two former friends and outlaws find themselves face to face once again, forced to work together to hide from the law and confront their complicated feelings in the process.Â
It's friends-to-enemies-to-lovers. It's second chance except the first chance ended in bloodshed. It's guard dog character vs. guy who didn't ask to hold his leash character. It's one bed. It's presumed dead. It's would-kill-for-you/would-die-for-you except that actually really sort of happens.
It's probably my favorite thing that I've ever written. And I can't WAIT to share it with you on my own terms.
July 6th! Mark your calendars!
Prologue | Desperate Hollow
then
Tex Bullock is no stranger to shoot-outs. Heâs participated in more than any sane man would, but heâs still standing. Even when the odds are against himâdown to his last bullet, outmaneuvered or outnumberedâhis pulse stays steady. As long as heâs got his hand wrapped round the familiar hilt of a revolver, the thud of his heart keeps consistent time.Â
But at this particular moment, his two six-shooters are safe and secure in their holsters and his blood is racing through his veins.Â
âWhatever you choose, Tex, Iâll stand by you.â Sawyerâs eyes are wide and honest. âWhatever you choose.âÂ
It doesnât make any sense, is the thing. Sawyer Watson is not a man inclined to nonsense and yet ten minutes ago heâd shown up to where the Boys were staying on the outskirts of a one-horse town and proceeded to spout a whole lot of it.
âWhat are you trying to say?â When Barlowe speaks, his voice is far calmer than Sawyerâs. It should soothe Tex. It doesn't. âWhat do you think Tex is going to do?â
âThatâs up to him,â Venom laces Sawyerâs voice but his eyes donât move from Tex. âBut I think heâd be well within his rights to shoot you where you stand.âÂ
âWhoa, hold on now, SawyerââÂ
The words come out of him before he can think. Itâs the first thing Tex has said since Sawyer started in on his accusations and Sawyer looks at him like heâs crazy for butting in, which is a little rich. Sawyerâs the crazy one, saying all the shit heâs saying like its true.
âHavenât you been listeninâ?â Sawyer shouts, eyes pleading. âHeâs been lying to you, for yearsââÂ
âSawyer, youâve got the wrong end of the stick here,â Barlowe says. âI have never lied to any of youââÂ
âYouâre lyinâ right now!â Sawyer looks at Barlowe, waving around the papers he has clutched in his fist. âThese letters are proofââÂ
âI truly have no idea what youâre talking about,â Barlowe says, still unmoved by the implosion of Texâs life that Sawyer claims to hold in his hand.Â
Sawyerâs eyes are back on Tex and his expression is as close to begging as Tex as ever seen. Despite everything, a rush of heat flows through Tex at the sight. Â
âTex, come on,â he says, extending his arm. âYou take a look yourself and youâll seeââÂ
âDonât you go putting lies and poison into Texâs head,â Barlowe says, spurred into action. The step forward he takes is small, but like everything he does, itâs with a confidence and certainty that would make most men cower.Â
Sawyer Watson is not most men.Â
âRight.â Sawyer laughs, mean and short. âThatâs your job, ainât it?â
âTex. Son.â The way Barlowe addresses him is warm and familiar, but he doesnât look away from Sawyer, who refuses to return his gaze. âI know youâve got a good heart, you see the best in folks, but this boy has always tried to get between us.âÂ
Both Tex and Sawyer flinch. Sawyer, Tex suspects, because he hates being called âboyâ outside the collective use; Tex because Barloweâs words bring to mind the last argument that Tex and Sawyer had, an argument that had left Tex furious and sent Sawyer into the wind. And now Sawyer is back and what had begun as relief at the sight of him swung right back into anger when Sawyer decided to turn his world upside down. Â
âYou know I wouldnât lie to you,â Sawyer says, voice desperate. âNot about this. I know we both said a hell of a lot the last time we saw each otherââÂ
âYou admitted yourself that you wanted to leave,â Tex says, figuring he canât make matters between Sawyer and Barlowe worse.Â
That may have been a miscalculation. Barloweâs eyes flare.Â
âDid he now?â Barlowe leans back on his heels, looking around at the rest of the Boys, who have gathered around them in anxious interest. An argument between Sawyer and Barlowe isnât so unusual as to spur anyone to intervene, but it seems everyone can sense this is different. âSee? Sawyer Watson may have contributed his fair share over the years, but there was never true loyaltyââÂ
âYou wanna talk about loyalty?â Sawyer spits, cutting off what was surely building to be one of Barloweâs grandstanding monologues. âWith the way you been treatinâ Tex his whole lifeââÂ
âThat ainât fair,â Tex argues. âIâd be dead several times over if it werenât for him.âÂ
âBut donât you want more than that, Tex?â Sawyer takes a step toward him and out of the corner of his eye, Tex sees Barloweâs right hand twitch. âYou can ask for more than just survivalââÂ
He canât help the scoff that leaves his mouth. âWell, thatâs easy for you to say, isnât it? I donât have the options you do. I donât have the hope of a cousin in California, another family I can join, easy as thatââÂ
âBut thatâs what Iâm tellinâ you, Tex! You couldâve had that!â The shouting has reached a fever pitch, the tension throughout the small ramshackle camp threatening to snap any second. âBut youâve been too useful to Barlowe for too longââÂ
âHang on.â Barlowe steps forward again. Thereâs still a considerable distance between Barlowe and Sawyer, with Tex stuck between, but every minuscule movement seems enormous. âTex is as good a member of our family as there ever has been, but he is more than just his use. You may not see that, Sawyer, with whatever scheme youâre trying to rope him into, but I do. I love this boy like heâs my own and Iâm just trying to protect himââÂ
Tex is too overwhelmed to be ashamed at how quickly tears gather in the corners of his eyes. It is beyond surreal to hear those words from Barloweâs lips. To have someone admit that they love him.Â
A desperate, broken sound cuts through the air. Tex looks over to see Sawyerâs crumpled expression, like heâs just had a knife slid right between his ribs.Â
âGoddammit, donât you see?âÂ
If Tex thought Sawyer looked close to begging before, now he feels Sawyer might actually get on his knees. The rush of heat becomes a fire, sweeping through Tex and remaking the landscape inside him so completely, he nearly forgets that Barlowe just called him family.Â
âHeâs manipulating you!â Sawyer takes another deliberate step toward him that Tex feels with a tug low in his gut. "Heâs always been manipulating you. And when you read these letters, youâll see, your fathââÂ
Tex is no stranger to shoot-outs and he knows with perfect accuracy when one is about to begin, like feeling electricity on the air the moment before lightning strikes.Â
Several things happen, seemingly all at once. The hand near Barloweâs hip twitches again and this time, Sawyer notices too. Sawyerâs own hand reaches for his gun, confident, as if heâd always been planning to pull it. And Tex knows exactly whatâs coming, sees what he stands to lose.Â
Sawyer is many thingsâa sharp mind, a strong hand in a fight, the best friend Tex has ever hadâbut his draw has never been half as quick as Barloweâs. Heâs never needed to get good at it, not with Tex by his side.Â
Tex can picture the next ten seconds with disturbing clarity; it plays out like a shadow puppet show on the back of his eyelids, a single blink bringing a new horrifying vision of the future.Â
Barlowe will get a shot off first.Â
The bullet will bury itself into Sawyerâs chest.
Sawyer will die.Â
Tex will watch Sawyer die.Â
So he does the only thing he can. He steps forward.Â
Heâs facing Sawyer when the shot rings out. In the breath between the loud crack of the gun and a sharp pain in his shoulder, he looks over every inch of Sawyer that he can. Not to memorize himâevery detail of the man is already locked permanently into Texâs brainâbut to indulge. His eyes land in their familiar favorite places: Sawyerâs broad shoulders, his capable hands, the warmth of his dark brown skin, the straight pillar of his spine. The gold flecks dappled in the brown of his eyes that are as rich and bright as the sun, lit by the clever spark thatâs always in Sawyerâs gaze. Â
Tex wants to tell him just how brilliantly his beauty burns but heâs flying backward before any final confessions can leave his lips.Â
He has time to recognize that the plan worked, if in a roundabout way. Sawyer is safe, but it was his bullet that left his gun first. He even has time to be proud of Sawyer, for his uncharacteristic quick draw, before life starts to blur at the edges.Â
He thinks he hears someone scream his name, more gunshots, the sound of hooves, but Tex is too busy focusing on breathing to register more than the broadest details. He canât see a thing other than the clear blue sky above him. His left hand twitches on the ground, dirt getting underneath his fingernails, until it finally finds the top of his revolver. The metal is warm to the touch, heated by the sun thatâs been beating down on him all day.Â
Tex tries focusing on that warmth, on the comfortable curve of the hilt underneath his palm, instead of the throbbing pain thatâs suddenly overtaken his right shoulder. He thinks his arm is wet, but itâs going numb so fast he canât tell. He pulls out his pistol, just enough to run his fingertips on the inside of the wood grip, tracing the familiar, comforting carving there.
The sun is getting darker in the cloudless sky and Tex has just enough life left in him to close his eyes and be grateful that he did something right for once. That he stood between Sawyer and death, and that he got to look at Sawyer, one last time, while he did.Â

At The End of a Warm Gun - Chapter 2 Snippet
As the rain intensified, drumming a frantic rhythm against the cabinâs walls, and the wind hurled its fat raindrops against the windows like tiny, sharp pebbles, thunder boomed and lightning split the inky sky; a terrifying, yet mesmerizing, spectacle that raged throughout the night. Alexandra, with the aroma of damp wood and coal from the cast-iron stove that filled the air, watched, mesmerized. Then turned on her side, her back a shield against the cool air near the window. She faced her brother, who slept soundly, a soft, steady rhythm of breathing his only contribution to the stormâs symphony. A flicker of envy, sharp as the lightning outside, pricked at her soul at his oblivious peace. But sleep, to Alex, felt like a betrayal of the raw, wild beauty that cascaded from the heavens. She turned again. And yetâas Alexâs gaze swept across the rain-lashed darkness outside, a sudden stillness caught her eye. There, she thought, a fleeting shape against the storm, perhaps only a trick of the rain-blurred vision, a figure on a horse, slumped over.
Her loud âPapa!â boomed, a sound that pierced the nighttime quiet and jolted the entire household awake. Bolted out of bed in her nightclothes and ran out into the storm without concern.
Bare feet squished through the cold, sticky mud towards the shadowy night rider. When Alexandra drew close, a sharp crack of lightning split the sky in two, illuminating the scene: her father, doubled over, arm clutched his stomach. That sharp stench of wet earth mixed with the metallic, almost copper-like, tang of blood that seeped through his soaked clothes. The once strong manâthe one person Alex reveredâteetered dangerously on the saddle, almost fell from the horse, his weight held only by her trembling strength.
âAlex,â he sputtered as she took his entire weight and helped him limp back to the cabin. âI donât know if I can make itâŚâ
âShush, papa, let me get you inside,â her voice cracked as she spoke.

In the red days of the West, centaurs and humans coexist. The desolation of the American West, burning bridges, true love, and ancient mythologies--find all of this and more in the pages of Hotblood! Vol.1: The Land of Promise, a re-imagining of the popular webcomic! The year is 1871 and the centaur Evander Rook finds himself at rock bottom, working for would-be robber baron Asa Langley--a human! As the unlikely pair get closer, romance and conspiracy run wild and Rook finds himself caught up in Asaâs ambitions as they are both forced to face the ghosts of their interwoven pasts.
As a long time fan of the webcomic Hotblood!, I'm so excited that it's coming to print! Enter a fascinating alternative history of the American west with centaurs, sphinxes, prophecies, and dark twists of fate. When Evander Rook signs on to work with Asa Langley, he really has no idea who he's joined forces with. Their path together is littered with secrets, violence, desire, and betrayal. The revamped version of the comic has a dreamy quality, with the story ebbing and flowing against a beautifully rendered backdrop of western scenery and ominous foreboding. I'm looking forward to volume 2!
