One of the reasons why I mention that Hudcon is more in line with Hollywood couples of the past and present, than typical Fandom shipping, is because it puts how they're moving at the moment into much better context. Actors who are simply being "shipped" together by their fans, even when its same sex, wouldn't have a problem being seen together hanging out as friends. Actors who are actually in a relationship, especially a Queer one, have to move much more carefully. This past week was an interesting, test run if you will of Hudson and Connor being relaxed and confident in their shared time together. However, we've already seen the spiraling from the toxic parts of the Fandom, and Hudcon still has to consider the GP going forward as well. It made me think of two very different couples that I think about where Hudcon is concerned. One is something of a cautionary tale from the fairly recent past, about the price some Queer couples or Queer Actors rather have paid for being open and out "too soon." The other is a couple that I could see Hudson and Connor being like when they're older and more established.

Anne and Ellen:

If you're of a certain age you definitely remember when the actress Anne Heche and comedian Ellen DeGeneres were a couple. I actually really liked Anne Heche as an actress when I was a kid, one of my favorite movies of hers Volcano, was actually kind of the beginning of the end for her. So back drop, they dated from 1997-2000 and were described as the first "gay supercouple." Ellen had just come out in 1997, and Anne never put a label on her sexuality, something that caused people to think that she wasn't Queer at all, especially because her other relationships were with men. But people weren't really saying sexuality can be fluid in the 90s. Anyway, Anne wrote in her memoirs that she was told not to attend the premiere of Volcano with Ellen in 1997. She did anyway, and according to her they were escorted from the premiere before the movie ended.

Fallout: Ellen had her own sitcom where her character also named Ellen came out as well. The show stayed on another season after, but ratings dropped and it was cancelled. But as we all know she went on to have huge success hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show (until she basically cancelled herself 🙃, but that's another story.) Anne's life after they broke up was a lot more tumultuous and tragic. Anne spoke about being essentially blacklisted for years after being in that relationship, and how being blacklisted from being on Ellen's show effected studio's willingness to hire her since she couldn't promote her work through that platform. Also, as I mentioned before Anne got a lot of criticism for essentially being seen as a "straight woman" who was just "experimenting". We're all familiar in this Fandom with how Biphobia works, and although Anne never identified as Bisexual, that particular kind of prejudice seemed to play a part in her ridicule since she publicly dated men and was eventually married to a man. Anne also struggled with mental health issues and passed away tragically after being in a car crash in 2022.

In this instance, although there was nothing wrong with their relationship, the timing just wasn't right. If you're of a younger generation think of today's homophobia in Hollywood and the world at large and then imagine it being 10x worse in the 90s. The prejudice and the intense scrutiny affected the life of one half of the relationship for years to come. It just seemed like too soon, wrong time. Also, I will say there was probably a hefty dose of sexism with them being women, mixed in with the homophobia.

All of this to say, yes, we know who Hudson and Connor are because they were on a wildly popular and successful Queer show. However, they're fresh to the industry, Hudson is a POC, and Connor is already considered more Clockable as Gay. Combine that with the homophobia that still exists, and you'll understand that while they may not have it as bad as Queer couples of the past, their caution for when and how they are seen currently and will be seen in the future is warranted. I think if you expect a quiet reveal instead of a loud declaration, you'll be okay. We will likely continue to get peaks like this past week into their shared life, but they also seem like the type of couple that a few years from now will just casually drop that they're married or together and keep it moving. So just be prepared for that 🤣.

Alright I'm done with the heavy, and talking about Anne Heche really does make me sad because I think she was a wonderful actress with a lot of pain. On to the couple that I think Hudson and Connor could be like in the future, mostly due to this couple meeting under similar circumstances. The main differences to me are the fact that these actors had been openly Gay in Hollywood for a while when they met and were also much older and established in their careers.

Tuc and Andrew:

Tuc Watkins and Andrew Rannells met while doing the revival of The Boys in the Band in 2018. I've talked about that play and the movie adaptations before. Notably in 2018 that was the first time the play had been done with an entirely openly Gay cast. Tuc and Andrew play the couple Hank and Larry. They have talked about how they knew something was there when they were doing publicity for the play, when the play was running at the end of the show, they would be out of character but still holding hands 🥹, very cute. They went Instagram official in 2019.

Now, the similarity to Hudcon is that this couple met while playing a couple in a Queer project. However, Tuc and Andrew were 53 and 41 when they went public with their relationship, had been in the industry for years, and were already out as Gay in Hollywood. Even though them coming out as a couple was simpler in many ways then Hudcon being out right now, they are like a mirror to the future for Hudcon. Men in a relationship who met while playing Gay characters and are open about their relationship and accepted. In time I can see Hudcon being open like this in the future, and that's why I've never thought it was a stretch to believe that Hudson and Connor fell for each other while working on Heated Rivalry and are now a couple. It's not an anomaly in Hollywood, just tricker because they're Queer.

This past week gave us a lot of Hudcon joy as fans, but it was also a glimpse into how a modern, young Queer couple navigates being seen together without being secret but still being cautious. The two examples I used are to highlight how hard it is for Queer couples in Hollywood in the past and present, but also there is hope to simply meet someone, fall in love and be together, while still having a career, Tuc and Andrew have also worked again several times again after being in The Boys in the Band. So, I have hope and believe that Hudson and Connor will get to work more together as well (besides Ember & Ice 🔥🫠).
