I often wonder how Lavellan's companions reacted to her "death" in the beginning TDWH. I'm a big softie for angst, so I dunno-...-glances nervously- How...would/did they react? Maybe? (I'm sorry-)
Solas is standing there, arm still outstretched to where the Inquisitor used to be.
Sera is the first to break the silence.
“Shit,” she swears. “Shit, shit, shit. She - she just went in the Fade again, right? She just took Coryphuck into the Fade, didn’t she? She’s going to come back out again, right?”
None of them can answer, for a moment.
It’s Cole who finally does.
“Dead,” he says, quietly. “Explosion. It’s ending. Doesn’t matter, what he said before. Never get the answers, but it’s alright, in the end. I can keep him safe.”
Slowly, Solas lowers his hand.
“Of course,” Dorian says, weary and bitter, the first to turn away. “Of course.”
“No, it’s fucking bullshit is what it is!” Sera contributes, and storms behind him.
Iron Bull lets out a heavy breath, and goes next. No words. There are never good ones for moments like this. The good ones come later, when the wound’s scabbed over. If they come at all.
Varric runs a hand over his face.
“Wish I was wrong more often,” he says, and with one last glance at Solas, he goes, too.
Vivienne stares at the ruin of their battle, a sweeping gaze that seems to take in the force of their efforts. Of the Inquisitor’s. The battle won, and the cost. Then, she, too is gone.
“Not even a body,” Blackwall says, half an apology and half an admonishment to the universe at large. He goes with her.
Cassandra stares. She seems the most rattled, somehow. The most surprised. Her gaze shifts, as if she is half expecting the air to open up, as Sera insisted it would, and spit the Inquisitor back out.
When it fails to, her expression tightens, and her shoulders move back, and she leaves.
Cole and Solas remain a moment, in the stillness.
“You made her happy. Being with you made her happy. Saving you made her happy,” Cole says. “She did not regret it, in the end.”
When he glances back, Solas is gone.
