Swimming into the weekend with the best decision I've made all year. To my 'son' in our #quarantinesummer — ⠀ ⠀ You are not my biological son, but I've claimed you. I've called you mine in every phone conversation about your summer school, I've nodded when every teacher said, "There's your mom!" at the pickup line. I've talked to insurance companies trying to reschedule COVID cancellations on your behalf and squeezed your hand when the man said, "Your mama must love you!" as he handed you your dripping ice cream cone.⠀ ⠀ You are my son, and you have been since I met you.⠀ ⠀ And no, I will never replace or take away what you have in your life. I know a pandemic is strange and has made our relationship even bigger (and hopefully better) than we ever imagined it would be.⠀ ⠀ But as we move forward with this summer and the changes and challenges — just you and I — I hope you know I'm trying my best. I hope you know I don't mean to lose my temper when I do. I hope you know that the sacrifices I'm making are because I can't imaging not being with you, even if it's harder on me.⠀ ⠀ I hope you know that when you say, "You're always working," it cuts deep, even though I know you don't understand the imbalance of our lives right now. I know that when you forget to do the dishes you're not purposefully disregarding me, you're just being a kid. I know when you roll your eyes it's because we've been doing this dance since February and sometimes you get tired of me, too. ⠀ ⠀ These months haven't been easy for us — day in and day out at home. I've been your caregiver and teacher, your mama figure and disciplinarian, your advocate and tutor, and rule-enforcer and lunch-maker. And I hope, somewhere in there, I've also been the person who's showed up for you⠀ who's been consistent for you⠀ who's loved you⠀ (perhaps even more than you know).⠀ ⠀ This summer is different. And I'm trying my best. I'm trying my best to navigate closures and restrictions, mask rules and beach playdates, virus updates and 'cohort hangouts' with friends, and somewhere in there my own business and self-care.⠀ ⠀ I know you won't understand right now.
