Roke Island, otherwise known as the Isle of the Wise, is a place where young men from all over Earthsea come to learn magic and craft of wizardry. In "A Wizard of Earthsea," Ged (the protagonist) travels to Roke, deep in the heart of the archipelago, to study under the Archmage and the school's nine masters. There he learns the true way of magic to fulfill his destiny that awaits him.
The first time Roke was introduced by Ursula Le Guin in 1968, the concept of a wizarding school was unconventional. It surely is, as Neil Gaiman said, 'the original, the finest, and the best'—a predecessor to contemporary magical institutions such as J.K. Rowling's Hogwarts.
