QT Sense, a Dutch biotech firm, raised €4 million in funding, advancing quantum physics and biology. A pioneering quantum sensing device called Quantum Nuova monitors cellular stress and metabolic activity in living cells with amazing single-cell resolution. The financing will accelerate its development and implementation.
The funding mix includes venture capital and non-dilutive grants. The Cottonwood Technology Fund led a €3 million seed round with an undisclosed angel investor and QDNL Participations. €1 million in grant funding includes €0.4 million from the Quantum Forward Challenge for real-world validation and €0.6 million from ONCO-Q for cancer applications.
A New Spatial Biology Method
The inability to observe dynamic biochemical activities has hampered cellular biology research for decades. Traditional approaches use frozen tissues or dead cells to provide a “snapshot” of a cell's past rather than its current.
Quantum Nuova aims to break this barrier. The device detects oxidative stress, metabolic changes, and free radical dynamics in real time using ultra-sensitive fluorescent nondiamond quantum sensors. Although traditional imaging and analytical methods cannot identify them, these dynamic signals are the principal causes of disease.
This skill adds knowledge that genomes, proteomics, and imaging cannot. Scientists can now monitor how cells respond to chemical compounds, adjust to environmental stress, and split into secret subpopulations, which helps them understand why some medicines work and others don't.
Treatment-resistant diseases
Practical applications of this technology are underway. It claims Quantum Nuova has shown FDA-approved pharmaceutical compounds' mechanisms of action. The new funding will expand the platform into colorectal cancer area.
Colorectal cancer is one of the most diverse and treatment-resistant disorders. QT Sense seeks to create the first functional maps of oxidative stress and metabolic vulnerabilities in colorectal cancer models using ONCO-Q assistance. The maps may set the groundwork for novel diagnostic and therapeutic methods, changing how oncologists practice.
From Prototype to Global Discovery Platform
This latest investment round aims to turn a promising lab prototype into a commercial tool. Dr. Deepak Veeregowda, CEO of QT Sense, said investors like Cottonwood chose breakthrough hardware to accelerate progress.
Dr. Veeregowda said quantum sensing reveals fundamental metabolic processes that were previously unknown, a scientific leap. He said the organization is building a platform for professional labs that is large, reliable, and smooth.
QT Sense will improve hardware robustness, throughput, and integrated analytics in the next phase. These improvements prepare the system for real-world research. Early-access units are for future placement with essential research and drug discovery partners. Collaborators will use the platform for mechanism-of-action research, functional heterogeneity analysis, and quick, label-free readouts across numerous samples.
Investor Trust in “Hard Science”
The investment shows European ecosystem need for “deep tech” and “hard science”. Cottonwood Technology Fund general partner Alain le Loux called QT Sense “exactly the kind of hard science company we look for,” emphasizing the technology's potential to transform disease understanding and treatment.
Ton van ‘t Noordende, general partner at QDNL Participations, said Quantum Nuova's metamorphosis from a “bold idea” to a “real discovery platform” justified the venture firm's early support. He praised QT Sense for combining scientific expertise with strategic execution, making them a quantum industry leader.
As the global quantum technology market grows, QT Sense's performance suggests that drug discovery may depend on real-time cell chemistry. QT Sense improves biological imaging and changes lab biology by going beyond dead-cell analysis.
