"Elisa Jane Carmichael connects to her saltwater country of Yoolooburrabee through her paintings and weavings which have been exhibited around Australia and the world.
The Quandamooka woman from Moreton Bay in Queensland holds a degree in Fine Art and a Masters of Fine Art in Fashion at the Queensland University of Technology.
She was drawn to weaving and clothing as art forms while doing her Master’s degree and researching a museum collection.
Inspired by saltwater country, her products incorporate looping, twining and coiling techniques which are used all around Australia. But there is a specific Quandamooka weave loop and knot which she readily uses in her creations.
As well as exhibiting her work, Elisa holds workshops where she teaches her techniques and explains the theory, culture and history behind her work.
She has presented her university research at Oxford University in the United Kingdom and has been published in national and international publications.
‘I will continue to learn, research and develop my work as a Quandamooka fibre artist and painter,’ Elisa said.
When asked what she hoped for the future of her art and Indigenous art in general, Elisa said, ‘To be seen and to be heard and to be shared.’"

The Yulu Burri Ba dancers and the Quandamooka people welcoming the whales to the waters surrounding Moreton Bay at sunset. The traditional ceremony welcoming the whales is known as Yura Yalingbila. I really enjoyed hearing the story about how the whale and dolphin got their blowhole after they were speared by the eaglehawk. A big fight broke out between all the animals from the land, sea and air. The eaglehawk stole the spear from the goanna and hit the whale and dolphin. The whale was so upset, he went back South. But every year he comes back looking for his brother in law dolphin. Thank you to Russell for telling the tale on the boat to Moreton. A most special place. The waters surrounding #Gnoorganbin (#MoretonIsland) are home to an incredible array of marine life. Dugongs and turtles frequent the sea grasses that flank the western side of the island (#MoretonBay). If you're visiting by boat or jetski then familiarise yourself with the 'go slow' zones near the island. Boat strikes are a significant factor in dugong and turtle fatalities in the bay (believe me, I've spent five years responding to marine standings on the island and filing the reports). I was absolutely delighted to have been selected for the workshop “Saltwater Country” Artist Creative Workshop, with Aboriginal Artist Megan Cope.
Megan is a Quandamooka woman from North Stradbroke Island in S.E Queensland. Works by Cope have been presented in Australia and abroad.

Congratulations on being selected for the Saltwater Country Artists' Creative Workshop to be held at Manly Art Gallery & Museum on Friday 24 April 2015. Attached is the running order for the day. (Please note, activities may be subject to change depending on further research, site visit and/or weather.) We will provide lunch and art materials - Please advise me of any dietary requirements.
