Day 3: How much can we eat?
Today, i watched an interesting video on food and the human body.
First it talks about the important role saliva plays. Our body secretes about 0.75- 1 litre of saliva each day.
When we consume something sour, we realise that more saliva is actually secreted. The purpose of this extra secretion is to reduce the acidity, so as to protect our internal organs.
And this brings us to an interesting fact: Our stomach can actually digest itself. In fact, our stomach lining is replaced every 3 days!
When we consume bread, we may taste something sweet and this is because the starch has been broken down into sugar for our body to use!
Another fun fact: It is not the sugar that causes harm to our teeth, but rather, the metabolites created by bacteria feeding on the sugar that are bad!
Saliva also contains histatins which heal wounds!
Our body can contain up to 3 to 4 litres of food. If we ever do consume anything more than that, our body would force us to throw up. It is possible to DIE from eating too much! (If we consume too much sodium bicarbonate which mixes with the acid in the stomach, resulting in production of carbon dioxide gas. The build-up of this gas in our body will eventually cause our stomach to “explode”!
That being said, there are notable examples of people who can eat way more than any normal being! For example, we have Charles Domery who can consume up to 9kg of food daily! The video mentioned another example but this is all i can recall.
However, there are even weirder things that people ate! Pica is a disorder where people crave and eat non-food items! A notable example of a person with this disorder is Michel Lotito .He even ate an aeroplane over the course of two years!
But obviously our body is amazing enough to protect us from what could potentially harm us. There is a disease called kuru which one can suffer from if one eats the human brain( cannibalism).
