QOULEUR 2013: 2QTPOC-Montreal CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR ART EXHIBITION  Location: RATS9 Gallery, Montreal, Quebec, Canada  Exhibition dates: August 16-23, 2013  Submission deadline: June 7, 2013  Co-curators: Wai-Yant Li and Jenny Lin  The second annual 2QTPOC-Montreal Festival, now called Qouleur, is taking place in Montreal in August 2013. This week-long festival celebrating racialized queer identities and experiences includes art exhibitions and performances, screenings, workshops, discussions, parties and more.  We invite artists who self-identify as two-spirited, queer or trans people of colour to submit proposals for visual artworks for a group exhibition exploring the (personal, cultural, political) significance of hair from a queer and / or racialized perspective.  Hair is a significant part of our bodies that can be considered in many ways. Hair is a signifier of individual and group identity. The way that one chooses to groom or style their hair can be read as a public display of one’s chosen self-representation, convictions and alignments. The significance of hair as a carrier of meaning might operate within specific societal codes, for example, existing within the regiments of mainstream ideals of beauty, gender codes, class, and race identifiers. From a queer and racialized experience, however, it might also exist in reaction to those mainstream codes, perhaps operate outside of that system or position itself within an entirely different set of culturally-specific codes (ie. what is visually read as queer in one culture compared to another). An individual’s hair can render them visible or invisible. It can be groomed or grown to be emphatically “racialized” or “queer.” It can be cut in an act of defiance. It can be faked, accessorized, exaggerated. Some of us lament the loss of hair or the excess of it on our bodies while others celebrate and desire these experiences. Some of us anxiously pull our hair, some find strange hairs in our intimate spaces and wonder whose it is.  Your proposal for artwork might interpret hair in relation to that listed below. We also welcome other interpretations:  -- Politics: ie. of race, sexuality, gender  -- Self-representation  -- Visibility / invisibility  -- Queer signifiers: looking queer / not looking queer  -- The experience of transitioning  -- Celebrating body hair  -- Shaving, cutting, styling, waxing  -- Adornments: wigs, extensions  -- DIY haircuts  -- Queer-safe / queer-friendly salons  -- Activism  -- Touch: intimacy, people asking to touch your hair  -- Drag  -- Aging  -- Looking “white” / looking “racialized”  -- Ideals of beauty  -- Regulatory regimes of appearance  -- Cultural specificity  -- Myth, metaphor  -- Loss  -- Etc  We invite artists to submit proposals for work in the following media / formats:  -- Video  -- Sculpture  -- 2D works: ie. drawing, painting, print, photography, etc  -- Installation  -- Performance  -- Web-based art  ::::::::SUBMISSION GUIDELINES::::::::  ALL APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT:  1. A project description including the technical requirements of your project (how your work will be installed or presented in this exhibition (500 words maximum)  2. An artist statement (300 words maximum)  3. A curriculum vitæ (maximum 3 pages)  4. Visual and/or audio support material as one or more of the following:  -- 10 images maximum (must be jpg format at 72 dpi, max. 1024 x 768 pixels) -- Video: maximum of 15 minutes of video (excerpts or complete works)  -- Interactive digital or web-based project  Your support material can be submitted as either:  -- CD or DVD (all material must be Mac OSX compatible)  OR  -- A link to your portfolio as a blog, website, Flicker, Vimeo or Youtube page. If you create a private online page, please provide a password to view the page  5. A list describing your support material including title, media, dimensions of work and year of production  6. Your contact information: name, address, phone number, email address  7. For hard copy submissions: a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) for the return of your support material. All applications without SASEs will be discarded three months after the committee has made its selections.  :: HOW TO SEND YOUR SUBMISSION ::  Submissions can be sent by mail or email. Images must be submitted as jpg files with a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels at 72 dpi OR please provide a link to view your images on your blog, website or Flicker page. All emailed application materials must be submitted in a single .zip archive folder. Video and audio works must be hosted online (ie. Youtube, Vimeo or website).  BY MAIL:  Applicants who would like to submit a hard copy of their written documents and other support materials on CD/DVD should mail the package to the address below.
