i’m glad too, the whole lovey-dovey was getting on my nerves, that is NOT delena at all. plus the ignoring stuff/lying to each other. they need to learn how to be in a relationship and still be friends/trust the other won’t go running for the hills.
yeah right now it's like they're walking on eggshells around each other. elena, even though she won't admit it, is always waiting to find out the next bad thing about damon. damon is always waiting for elena to finally have enough of him.
things were much simpler when they weren't dating. damon could say or do anything because elena was not his girlfriend to lose. elena could say or do anything to damon because she hadn't chosen him and had to stand by it no matter what. as a result, they were much more brutally honest and true with each other. and that honesty is what allowed them to forge a relationship and trust each other
things get infinitely more complicated, though, when you factor in the theme of change and how both of them evolved but also fundamentally stayed the same. it was gradual, but both of them HAVE changed, as a result of things happening around them and within them. and now damon just realized things are changing too much too fast and he's afraid of it. one one hand he loves elena no matter what, on the other he doesn't want her to compromise her morals for his sake. it's a question of loving the other person no matter what vs not wanting them to become someone they're not.and all that came to the surface because damon is keenly aware that he is the one who hasn't changed. but in a way he has, in the sense that he is now concerned about how his actions affect those around him he cares about. on one hand he doesn't want to change who he is, on the other hand he doesn't want other people to change who they are to accommodate him either.it's a brilliant struggle and it's so perfectly in tune to both their characters and their relationship
