I definitely drew inspiration from a personal place. The song itself is about going through some tough times in life, dealing with loss and regret and how those things can affect you. I wasn’t giving my full attention to or being thoughtful or compassionate in my present relationships because I was so caught up in the turmoil of the past and all of these other things that were negatively affecting me. The song and a lot of the album is about getting through that murkiness and letting it go so you can be present for what really matters. For the video, I used actual VHS camera footage from a trip I took with my wife while I was writing some of these songs. It seemed to fit well with the mood and context of the song 2. When creating the song, how long did it take to accomplish from start to finish? This was one of those songs that came together a little more effortlessly then some others. I had recorded a voice memo of just singing the lyrics over some chords with an acoustic guitar, and so the structure of the song was pretty much all there. I played it for the band while we were rehearsing before going to the studio, and they came up with some really cool parts for it almost immediately. I remember especially digging Devin Eiring’s lead guitar stuff, almost as soon as he started playing to it. We were at the studio recording and had finished the songs we wanted to track earlier than expected so we decided to record this song, almost as an afterthought. Our friend Marc Brown who played a lot of drums on the album had already left the studio so I jumped on the drums and tracked them for the song. It was all very spur of the moment, but when it came together it became one of our favorite songs. Funny how these things work sometimes. 3. At what age did you realize that music is a career you wanted to pursue; what was your ‘ah-ha’ moment? I don’t know if I would ever consider music a career per se, but I have always enjoyed making music, from the time I was a little kid. My grandfather played the trumpet so I actually took that up at an early age as my first instrument. I ended up switching to drums so that I could play in a rock band with my childhood friend who was a really good guitarist and I always enjoyed the process of making songs. Later in life when I moved away from home I took up guitar because you can create a song with the guitar and some lyrics anywhere anytime, and also drums weren’t very portable. 4. Who are your musical inspirations; what artists inspired you to start your career and find your musical passion? I’ve been influenced by so many different types of music throughout the years. Growing up as a skateboarder in the early 90s I was super into hip-hop and punk rock and everything in between, just from seeing and hearing that stuff in skate videos. I think a lot of that has shaped the way I make music. I really enjoy trying to come up with interesting beats and using textures and other sounds to add character to a song. I think our overall sound is very inspired by punk and post punk, artists like The Talking Heads and Joy Division and Bauhaus and also modern acts like Arcade Fire. I think my love of hip hop finds its way into some of the beat making stuff that occasionally accompanies our music. 5. What other treats do you have in store for us this year? Can we expect more music? We are trying to play as many shows as we can this year, and get the album out there as much as possible. We’re actually working on a lot of new music as well. The album took around two years to make, and during that time we had been writing some new stuff as well so there are some new tracks that we are working on. We’d love to put out an EP at the end of the year, but definitely not going to rush anything. Just really enjoying playing this album as well as some of our older stuff at the moment.
