I did more research then probably necessary on red carpets. I learned about the background stuff that happens, how perfectly timed they are, all of it. It’s sort of insane how these things actually work. And as I did all this research I was getting really frustrated with myself. I didn’t want it to be about the red carpet or the celebrity status. I wanted it to still feel like Marcus and Techie.

I made the decision to keep it from Marcus’s POV strategically for that very reason. If we had been seeing it through Techie’s eyes it would have been 500 words easy of metaphors on cameras and their flash and how exposed she felt. All good stuff that I may one day go back to, but that’s not what I needed that moment to be about. I needed it to be about them. 

Marcus on the other hand is comfortable with this world. He’s so relaxed about it that he simply reminds himself of the steps and goes about it like he does it every day. It allows him the opportunity to show Sarah’s discomfort with just a quick glance back. He knows her smile, every single version of it, except for the one he sees here. This is when he decides to give a mental ‘fuck you’ to everything that’s happening around the two of them. He pulls Techie close, he whispers something vaguely filthy in her ear, and he ignores every single question tossed his way.

There are twenty different versions of this scene in my head where he says something snappy back at them, or Techie throws out a statement or two, but again, that all pulled away from what I wanted, which was for it to be about how much these two idiots love each other. 

Slowly he coaxes Techie’s real smile out of her and we see that slightly possessive streak come into play, just barely.

All for him.

And I simply cannot help myself. Respirar is almost like their motto at this point. Breathe. At this point all either one of them has to do is give the other a look, and they can hear that word being said. For Marcus and Techie Respirar means “I’m here with you. We’re in this together.” I try not to overuse it, but it has popped up in very important places throughout this story and that trend will continue.
