"What the fuck," Sam mutters under his breath. He hits the spacebar again. Gently at first. But harder the second time. And even harder the third. And, as if to spite him specifically, the screen goes black for a second before flashing the hospital logo in his face. Like it's mocking him.

he'd given up trying to find something to watch on tv. how much does he pay for three streaming services only to have nothing to watch? instead, sam lays on his couch, scrolling through tiktok videos, watching cat jumpscares at 2x speed with his finger pressing at the edge of his screen. a knock at the door breaks him out of his trance. lazily, he rolls off the couch, tossing his phone on the coffee table as he pulls himself to his feet. "i'm coming, i'm coming." it's not like there are many people who would be knocking on his door at this hour. "the kids are asleep in my bed," he says, letting dinah inside. "fed them pizza, sorry uncle sam didn't have healthy kid food on short notice but there's some left over if you're hungry. might even still be warm."

If you asked him, he wouldn't admit that he's been waiting for Indy to make her way to the cafeteria. But that doesn't necessarily make it not true. Sam eats his lunch slowly, a carrot stick at a time, and checks his phone and the text that said she was on her way.

When he sees her, he grins and waves her over. "Soo," he says, not waiting for her to sit down, "we're going out for your birthday right? And keep in mind if you say no, I've already got a hand signal for the entire cafeteria to start singing happy birthday to you."

he keeps his back to the door, doing his best to hide the smoke from his cigarette should someone sneak up on him. the last thing he has time for tonight is a doctor giving him shit. at least he's not vaping, which he read somewhere that is like basically huffing lead paint. cigarettes can't be worse than that.

when the door opens, he twirls around waving the smoke away and tucking his hand behind his back. sam lets out a sigh of relief when he realizes it's only taren. "thank christ. please tell me you're on overnight tonight. no one else fun is on shift."
