Blog Post 7: Maze Interior Blockout and Puzzle Chambers
After finalizing the outer entrance, my focus shifted to the interior of the maze, the heart of the player's journey. The aim was to design a winding, claustrophobic series of corridors interspersed with hidden puzzle chambers, creating both tension and exploration opportunities.
Using the same symmetrical design philosophy as the entrance, I laid out interconnected pathways but intentionally disrupted patterns to create subtle disorientation. Hidden chambers were positioned strategically along dead ends or forked paths, encouraging players to explore while maintaining the constant fear of alien pursuers.
Each chamber housed a unique environmental puzzle tied to an elemental stone: Earth, Water, or Fire. The puzzles were designed to be quick but challenging, focusing on spatial awareness and memory rather than complex interactions. Given VR’s need for intuitive play, puzzle elements were large, visually clear, and physical, perfect for a hands-on VR experience.
At this stage, I also began considering lighting and verticality, ensuring that taller towers, broken structures, and hidden doorways added depth to the experience.
Although the maze structure was coming together well, the true atmosphere would only emerge once assets, textures, and dynamic lighting were layered on top, the next major milestone for our project.
