Amy was on night duty, walking through the room of cells, aware of the eerie stillness that filled the place. A few months ago the prisoners still fought, still cursed, still tried to get a rise out of the guards. At least some of them did. Part of her wished they still did, but the other part of her knew that consequences were forthcoming. Any small act of resistance would make things much worse for them.
She stopped in front of Pavelās cell as usual. She always sensed his emotions, but they seemed to resonate more strongly in closer proximity. Amy knew that once lights were out, it was harder to see the security footage for the cell room; she also knew that the camera room only had one guard tonight, and that heād complained about being tired earlier that morning at breakfast. She tried to imagine him snoring peacefully in the desk chair as she took the keys out and unlocked Pavelās cell, stepping inside.Ā
She wasnāt sure what she could say to him to make him believe that she was a member of his pack. Though she couldnāt rely solely on the bond to make him sense the truth, she hoped that would be the case in the end. As she neared his seemingly sleeping form, she knelt closer to the ground.Ā
āPav,ā she whispered, realizing she actually didnāt know what the hell she was doing. If she got caught it would most likely be game over for her, maybe even the other undercover rebels. Still, she continued. āPavel, itās Amy. Iām so sorry-āĀ
She was interrupted by blinding pain as a fist collided with her nose and she fell back, cupping her hands over her face. When she opened her eyes, Pavel was pulling her hands away and wrapping his own around her neck. He was choking the air out of her lungs before she could even think to scream, a stream of foreign words spewing angrily from his mouth. Though she didnāt understand them, the sentiment was well ascertained.Ā
Flashes of her own past torture flew before her eyes, followed by the memory of Kol almost killing her. Seconds before she wouldāve passed out, the backup guards ran in and dragged Pavel off of her. She gasped for air as she turned over and watched them drag him kicking and screaming out of the cell room to an unknown location.Ā
She started to cry as she stood up, another guard rushing to her side to help her out of the room. Whatever happened to Pavel was on her head. And how was she possibly going to explain herself to Coin?Sheād let the pack down as well as all the others undercover, just because she stupidly thought she could help.
