You guys, I’m so excited. I have cerebral palsy, so I wasn’t sure I’d ever drive at all, and now I’m 5th on the list and moving up!!

I’ll use what’s called push rock hand controls, left handed. (Shout out to my lefties out there!) where pushing forward hits the brakes, and pulling back applies the gas. They’ve explained that the pedals will still work, but they would probably place a board over them under my feet so that I don’t accidentally hit those. (That would be very bad)

I worry that for whatever reason I won’t be as good as everyone else – that I won’t be able to listen to music or podcasts while I drive, or talk, or anything else (strictly legal or not 😅 i.e. eating or talking on the phone, though I wouldn’t be able to eat – probably be able to talk, if I get a fancy car that will put my calls through the speakers) that everyone else does while they drive. I’m totally sure that this is unreasonable, and with time, I’ll be driving on autopilot like everyone else on the planet.

I am seriously so excited to do things like hit up my local Target, or the bookstore, or the park. Do my own errands, and visit my friends, whenever I want to. I won’t have to beg my brother for nerve wrecking rides in his filthy car that smells like old pizza, or my sister who works two jobs and often stays at her boyfriends place. I decide to go somewhere, and I’ll just...go. I won’t need to ask a single soul, I’ll just leave.

After my experiences in my siblings cars, I plan to keep mine clean and smelling nice. I know everybody says that, but it’s a goal. I’ve even looked at trash receptacles specifically for cars, and I hope to have one of those be the very first thing I put in my new car when I get in. That, and one (or two) of those things you put in the vent to make it smell nice. (That new car smell won’t last forever) and lastly something cute to dangle behind my rear view mirror, behind my parking placard.
