Salt-N-Pepa File Lawsuit Against Record Label to Regain Ownership of Iconic Tracks Like 'Push It'
Hip-hop pioneers Salt-N-Pepa have filed a lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), accusing the label of violating copyright law by refusing to return ownership of their master recordings, including hits like “Push It” and “Shoop.” Citing the Copyright Act of 1976, Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton argue they’re legally entitled to reclaim their work decades after initial agreements.
The lawsuit alleges UMG pulled their music from streaming platforms in retaliation and has rejected efforts to transfer rights, claiming the songs were “works made for hire.” Salt-N-Pepa deny this, asserting their contracts clearly grant them ownership. They seek damages exceeding $1 million and a court order affirming their rights.
