Fatherhood's great conundrum
When to push and when to pull is, of course, the famous conundrum of fatherhood.
If a father fails to instill in his offspring a sense of confidence, independence and adventurousness, he could end up with a kid taking up residence indefinitely in the basement of the family home.
On the other hand, if he gets the spirit of adventure to take hold, he may have to settle for cards and phone calls - as opposed to hugs and kisses - on Fathers Days to come.
With all four of my kids living outside Michigan (two in California, one in Indiana and one in heaven), I can only conclude that I was successful in planting the seed of my own distress.
But the antidote comes in knowing that the kids are doing well and that distance can't weaken the bond.
