visual kei is a japanese altrock subculture originating in 1982 with the group XJAPAN! its called visual kei due to the visually shocking music videos, sound production, and artist appearances!

the vkei subculture earned more popularity in 1992 due to the group malice mizer’s debut! manasama (bassist) is very popular despite his whole thing being not talking, as well as the vocalist, GACKT (he got his own vocaloid: gakupo!)

speaking of manasama! if u look him up, u may notice he dresses very femininely! many visual kei bands have at least one member who is more effeminate, referencing old japanese theater when women were not allowed to perform on stage. the men who played the female roles were called “onnagatta”! kaya (solo artist) uses the same title, and iirc mana also uses it (but dont quote me)

visual kei is around 40 years old, and many many MANY bands have come into the scene since then! i personally rlly like DADAROMA and gulugulu, but they have both disbanded 💔 theres a lot of controversy between kaneto juusei and gulugulu due to chill (the lead of kj) being accused of copying ai’s (lead of gulugulu) makeup but literally who gaf is makeup guys qwp

fun fact about the GazettE and SiD! they did intro music for the anime “black butler”! (also my fav anime)

M' sorry this isn't a great reference sheet, but to be honest? There's no standard. I mean the left ear might be folded but it's hard to draw so that's only sometimes, I can be round or not, eyes are... Hard :(
