We are now two days into Egg being afraid to go up the steps into the house. She’s gone up these four steps multiple times a day for months. Then on Saturday night she decided it was Scary. Possibly she slipped or something coming up but I’m always there when she comes in and out and I didn’t see anything amiss.
Yesterday we had one success when she went up the stairs normally. Today no luck.
So far I’ve tried: Adding a mat to the bottom of the stairwell for traction. Rewarding any choice to interact with the stairs (we can get as far as one foot on the second set— she won’t take a step with her back legs at all.) Putting treats on each step. Letting her stand at the bottom of the steps while I do meal prep in the kitchen to see if she will choose to go up eventually. Nope.
I was hoping this was just a weird adolescent blip, but it doesn’t seem to be improving. She goes down the steps no problem. She goes UP the big staircase in the house no problem.
I can carry her up the steps but she HATES being carried— got a lot better about it when I minimized the amount I had to pick her up. Now that I’m having to do it regularly she’s tensing her entire body when I reach down to pick her up and showing new reluctance to even enter the door because she knows I will have to pick her up.
Any ideas for things to try? I’m started to feel discouraged. Today I started working on a little hind-end awareness outside of the stairs, but that’s no quick fix. Ordered stair treads to put more traction on the steps themselves. She’s generally pretty confident environmentally, she likes to hop up on things. I’m really at a loss.
