Real feelings about returning to real Virginia pulled-pork - food that's only real when it's made here: the local way, by local people, from local animals, and it tastes so good! There is pulled-pork in every state but really it just exists here, at home, in Virginia.
Virginia has its own smell and you get it best in the summer with the windows open. I love it. I think it comes from something in the soil and the water, so we smell it from everywhere plants, and then it gusts and soaks into everything including me, fresh and warm and green. It's familiar and I don't know how to describe it: more - something. More something.
I am probably eating a pig that grew up down the street from where I grew up and I think we share a kind of oneness because one day his great-great-great-grandpiglets will grow up eating corn that grew out of the ground that ate me. I hope they enjoy it. I hope I taste as good as they do right now, at home, in Virginia.
