1905

First nickelodeon opens

On this day [June 19] in 1905, some 450 people attend the opening day of the world’s first nickelodeon, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and developed by the showman Harry Davis. The storefront theater boasted 96 seats and charged each patron five cents. Nickelodeons (named for a combination of the admission cost and the Greek word for “theater”) soon spread across the country. Their usual offerings included live vaudeville acts as well as short films. By 1907, some 2 million Americans had visited a nickelodeon, and the storefront theaters remained the main outlet for films until they were replaced around 1910 by large modern theaters.

1972

Title IX enacted

On this day [June 23] in 1972, Title IX of the education amendments of 1972 is enacted into law. Title IX prohibits federally funded educational institutions from discriminating against students or employees based on sex. It begins: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Though this week has appeared quiet, there has been a nasty undertow to the events I have had to deal with.  From work to writing, everything has felt the pull, and this has made for a grumpy head pukah.

For starters, I can say the nickelodeon references is most apt.  It feels like every time I’m about to get ahead, I find myself running flat out to remain where I am - similar to the vaudeville shows during their heyday.  I have plenty of real life work (the live vaudeville acts), not so much for the writing (the short films).  Since I am someone who must write to stay happy, or be so buried in reading I don’t see real life for days at a time, being unable to do either started the turbulence that led to the energy drain this week.

Before I could start to smooth out the work flow in order to balance writing and work, the next round of turbulence hit, almost pulling my head under once again.  My work schedule tried to explode on me, similar to what happens when a quake hits a building.  Everything jitters and dances on the surface, yet the cause is deep underneath-invisible.  Thankfully I do not build my world with cards, so though things got rattled, they didn’t collapse.

(Yup, this looks about right.)

The last two references wound up combined - mostly thanks to work, new clients, and geography.  Now, instead of having a schedule that easily lets me balance work and writing, I’m constantly pouring over times, distances, and someone else’s schedule to make sure mine fits in without getting tossed out the window come billing time.  I cannot wait until I’m in the driver’s seat for scheduling again, let me tell you!  

Now, add to the mix - my muse has decided to start jabbering again, but only when I’m not at a computer where I can get his words written down.  Anyone have a copy of Dragon I can borrow?  Seems recording so I can run the dictation later is going to become a major player in my life for a while.

Throughout the rumbles this week has set off under my feet, the mud and the bog that I’ve had to slog through, I cannot say I’ve been completely set back to square one momentum-wise.  I’m one of the lucky ones - the more pressure you apply, the better I tend to do.  (Unless I’m in the middle of burning out, then I just burn brighter so I burn out faster.)

This week has tested me, and I feel I have come out of it a little scorched, but still slugging.  I have the last chapters for my next novella pinpointed in my head.  Not exactly mapped out, but the major events coordinated - just have to get time to write them out.  Maybe tomorrow or Monday?  I also have snippets for the novella that’s following, just not sure what order they’re in right now.

Looking at the accountability list I posted last week.... I’d cry “extenuating circumstances” but that’d just be crying wolf.  So, I’ll have to buckle down to get those done along with trying to get the next novella started and add some more to the next main series novel.  I also need to get in touch with the author I’m working with for a cross over series, though I’m not sure how well that one’s going to go.

And since I’m doing my best to not claw my skin off due to chigger bites, and I’m scheduled to go offer myself up as another chigger feast tomorrow, I’m going to end this week’s post.
