Sometimes I meet really cool people at the library. An old woman and her family came in to record an oral historyâbecause the old woman had been the secretary to NASA astronauts in the 1960s. Among many other cool things, she had this packet of cheese sandwiches, an example of what would be sent into space with the astronauts. The Velcro enabled them to stick the packets to the spacecraft. She also had a charm bracelet that held charms which the astronauts took into space for her and brought back.
She had all these incredible memories and artifacts, but she was surprised that I was moved and awed by her story, because she had always worried that she wasnât good enough to be there at NASA. But she sure as hell was, and still seems like an incredible woman.
