okay but just like, imagine, in a no-sburb karkat-as-revolutionary ‘verse, someone finds the psiioniic in the rubble of one of the ships they destroy from the empire, and they bring him to karkat. “i’ll find karkat, he’ll know what to do!” because karkat always knows what to do when it comes to difficult people and their emotions.
karkat has no idea what to do.
the psiioniic is old. old as balls. he is scarred, not just physically. he is acutely injured in a way that needs immediate medical attention. he has been so conditioned that he is an unperson in his own eyes. he begs karkat, more than once, to kill him, because he is useless now that he’s not in a helmscolumn, and if he’s serving no purpose, he may as well not be alive.
but karkat is, if nothing else, the great conciliator. eventually, gradually, in his own rough, coarse way, he takes psii’s self-loathing and turns it the fuck around. sometimes he deliberately shows weakness and self-hatred in front of the ex-helmsman so psii can feel useful in talking karkat down from a breakdown.
yeah, this sounds super pale. except then out of the helmscolumn, psii starts having sexual urges. that he hasn’t had for thousands of years. that he’s terrified of, because that means he’s an actual person with needs that deserve to be taken care of. (karkat loves all over him and then pretends like it wasn’t love, because i ship karkat spades with his own feelings.)
