Barneys New York Analysis
Barneys first store was opened in 1923 by Barney Pressman. He was a pioneer in advertising for men's clothing and led his son to bringing the store into the spotlight by partnering with such designers as Givenchy and Cardin in the 1960's. The store was expanded into women's wear in the 70's and in the 90's, Barneys started opening stores all across the country, including a destination in Japan.
Their mission statement reads:
"Barneys New York is.... ....a mecca for discerning fashionistas and clothing connoisseurs since 1923. ....a Manhattan institution. ....a blast! ....an emporium of style and gorgeous products. ....a celebrity hangout.
Carrying brands such as Valentino, Saint Laurent, Fendi, Alexander McQueen, Proenza Schouler, Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, Ralph Lauren, Balenciaga and Louboutin, it's easy to see why Barneys is the premiere destination for fashion forward men and women in need of luxury designs.
Depending on what catalog you choose to flip through, you'll have different ideas of what Barneys visual aesthetic is. No matter if they use a plain white background or the inside of a refrigerator, one thing will always reign true about Barneys styling: it's simple. One or two items per shot, no fuss in shapes, simply stuffed to perfection, no creases or imperfections. Each item looks immaculate and shines individually. You won't find more than two, or sometimes three, items in one shot. That minimalistic, simplistic yet luxurious set-up is the perfect summary of Barneys itself.
