As it lies in wait, the Iranian spider-tailed horned viper moves the complex structure on its tail like a spider. When a bird — usually a warbler — swoops down for the “spider,” the snake lunges for its meal.

(Pseudocerastes persicus fieldi) Field’s horned viper There is a more pronounced difference between the two subspecies with regard to their venom. While Pseudocerastes persicus persicus’ venom exhibits strong hemorrhagic activity typical of most vipers, the venom of P. p. fieldi is unusual in that contains several fractions that show marked neurotoxic activity. No antivenin is available for bites from either subspecies. It is reported that a polyvalent antiserum does offer some protection from the hemotoxins, but none against the neurotoxic effects of P. p. fieldi venom

What thoughts can there be aside from it being one of the coolest evolutionary feats of mimicry ever ever? Unbelievable that it went so long without being discovered.

The Spider-tailed Horned Viper (Pseudocerastes urarachnoides) has a very unusual tail: the tip is modified into an elaborate structure that resembles arachnids known as solifugids. (Image source.)
This viper uses its tail as a lure, mimicking the appearance and movement of a solifugid -- then ambushing any small animals that fall for the illusion of a free meal.
Although a single specimen was originally collected from western Iran in 1968, it was so strange that it was considered to simply be a deformed individual of an already known species of viper. It wasn't until the 2000s that further examples of this snake were found, all with the same odd tail morphology, and it was finally recognized as its own unique species.
