Casual “nomadic Japanese” eatery JYPSY recently opened up on Martin Road in the spot PS.Cafe’s American-Chinese concept Chopsuey Cafe used to be (they’re also behind JYPSY). We’re not sure what nomadic Japanese means, but JYPSY serves up some surprisingly interesting contemporary eats inspired by the Land of the Rising Sun.

We like that’s it’s not trying to be too innovative for innovation’s sake; the Bluefin Tuna JYPSY Sashimi ($24++, pictured above) and Smoked Mackerel Sushi Roll ($14++) are sufficiently Japanese in origin but with interesting touches. More controversial if still tasty are the JYPSY Salmon Tacos ($14++) which comes in a “taco shell” that’s really a toasted seaweed cracker. But stay away from the Unagi and Pork Gyoza ($12++), whose lovely ginger scallion ponzu sauce can’t save the gyozas with their doughy thick skins, or the Smokey Unagi Fried Rice ($22++) that’s more bibimbap with its mess of ingredients and comes more soggy than smoky.

Still, JYPSY will make for a good girl’s night out, or a casual Saturday lunch with friends.
