the alleyway is scantly lit, only a sliver of moonlight painting itself like a gash on faith’s face — bloody and bruised, her sneer long gone. she did this to her. faith struck first, but buffy swung last and made it out of there in one piece, her friends trailing behind her to make sure she wasn’t too shaken from the betrayal. and yet, as soon as she’s rid of them, her feet, with a mind of their own, take her back to the scene of the crime, surprised to find faith still lying in the gutter. despite what she’s done, buffy can’t seem to turn her back on her. maybe that’s for the best — if she does, she’ll just find another blade in it.
“ yeah, well . . . ” buffy trails off, even surprising herself with the hand she offers out to faith to lift her up, “ figured i’d come back and see you looking all pathetic-y. think i’ve earned the right to enjoy it. ” there’s no cruelty in her tone, only sadness, as she pulls faith to her feet. she can’t bring herself to look into faith’s eyes once they’re level with one another, gaze averting to the ground, her hands grasping at mr. pointy in a way that would give anyone who wasn’t them splinters — anything but facing her problem head on. “ i have to admit — it doesn’t feel the way i thought it would. ”
