The term fraction is derived from the Latin word ‘fractus’ which means broken. It is representative of a section or a part of a whole number. More often than not, these sections are equally divided.  In simpler terms, a fraction is used to describe the number of parts of a certain size or quantity. For example, one-third, two-fifths, three-seventh etc.
