NOT an expert, this post was made on a short 3 to 4 hours research, I merely got interested bcs I like pretty things including pretty and interesting insects (even If I get a little grossed out by some of the legs and eyes on some of the bugs, I still like them) and this idea came to me when I was looking at my favorite butterflies, more specifically Morpho Helena and thought "huh, Helaena (HOTD) would love this" and decided to give my favorite characters each one an insect, originally it was supposed to be the characters from House of the Dragon whoever I got carried away because I remember that they were lots of insects that have mythology inspired names and so do Harry Potter characters so I got to work.

Starting with the girls course they don't get enough attention.

Pandora Lovegood = Actias luna (Luna moth)

Dorcas Meadows = Lycaema dorcas (Dorcas Copper)

Mary McDonald = Heliconius melpomene Amaryllis

Marlene McKinnon = Cyrea marlene

Lily Potter Evans = Lilioceris lilii

James Potter = Lucanus cervus (Greater Stag Beetle)

Sirius Black = Scarabeceus satyrus

Remus Lupin = Lytta sayi

Peter Pettigrew = Thopeutica petertaylori

Kingsley Shackebolt = Danaus plexippus

Xenophilius Lovegood = Actias luna

Bartemius Crouch Jr. = Euploea mulciber

Mulciber = Euploea mulciber

Notes: I knew I wanted to choose a butterfly of the game Meriane after Maria Sibylla Merian just like I knew I wanted all the four of the marauders to be beetles (see what I did there). I crapped Opsiphanes cassina merianae very soon tho due to the backstory I made for her of Mary's daddy being a postman and there being a postman butterfly named after Maria Sibylla Merian, also postman butterflies cientific name has MELPOMENE on it, which was just perfect.

You read that right, it's named after the Greek muse of tragedy. Who, mind you, is also portrayed with bloody dagger and a tragic mask on her hands or sometimes a cup. Now, tell me that's not a perfect choice for Mary who was attached by a (presumed or to be) death eater and lived a very tragic event by said death eater hands + also, in my mind Mary castrates her attacker with a dagger after drugging him with a cup of wine, maybe even after disguising as another death eater (be it a woman death eater like Alecto or her disguising as a male). But I'll talk more about that and my backstory for her in another post.

Also the heliconius melpomene meriana used to be known also as heliconius melpomene Cybele and if you know anything of Cybele on mythology I think you would find this interesting and inclined me further to choose that one but in the end Heliconius Melpomene Amaryllis ended up winning me over due to my own bias since one of my favorite flowers to assign to Mary is amaryllis. Sue me.

For Marlene I knew right away I wanted a ladybug and guess what? I knew the perfect choice, a ladybird beetle with literally freaking "Marlene" in the name. It was just meant to be. I partly wanted a lady beetle bcs I knew that I was gonna choose beetles for the marauders and having one for Marlene made sense to me due to her being childhood friends with James & Peter in my mind, also to honor Blackinnon. This is also one of the reasons I choose a beetle for Sirius rather than a majestic elegant butterfly like the rest of his family (another reason why it was not a butterfly).

For the Black children I choose:

Andromeda satyr for Andy, a beautiful white butterfly with purple spots, one which not only shared her name but is also the opposite color to Black, which is also the family name.

Scarabeceus satyrus for Sirius, yes, a dung beetle, and I guess I could make some joke about how Sirius takes scrap from James even after he die to the point he chooses the closest thing to James to hold onto aka the crappy version of James (who already was crappy even if he matured) but I won't. Cuz in nice like that. Instead I'll tell you a fun fact about it. Dung beetles use the sky to navigate, some use the sun like the sacred beetle, some nocturnal ones use the moon, but more specifically, this beetle uses the uses light from the Milky Way. Also, I liked that 'satyrus' was similar to 'satyr' linking Andy and Sirius together while also the insects being different as a way to symbolize how even to both of them escaped, they did it in different ways.

Sunset Morpho for Regulus, as I wanted to choose the largest butterfly in Morpho kinda like how even though Regulus is a sightly less handsome version of Sirius he overcompensated by being the perfect little heir of the house of Black.

Thopeutica petertaylori, a new tiger beetle species for Pete.

A type of Blister beetle for Remus, green, which is cool, with orange in his legs, lanky, like Remus, and Lytta comes from Greek λύττα (lytta), meaning martial rage, raging madness, Bacchic frenzy, or rabies. Great choice for the one that becomes a raging werewolf that'll do more than leave blisters if you get close once in a full moon. Also, this one is know to feed on Lupin, the flower.

For Lucius I choose Metacharis lucius. Haven't got much to say about that.

For Dumby, another beetle, like Sirius, but instead this one is called the Dor beetle or the Dumbledore. This one can be a beautiful blue with hints of green as well as black, ik that in canon he is a Gryffindor for I like to think that this is a way of saying toward the end of his life he was more of a Ravenclaw with some Slytherin in him tham a Gryffindor. Maybe it was different in his youth before the accident...

For Mcgonnagall I chose two different butterflies with an Minerva on it. But in the end i remembered she had a husband in canon so I gave the other one to her never seen never talked about husband.

For Poppy I picked a ladybird beetle commonly called Ornate checkered beetle which is often found in poppies.

For my goat Kingsley, I choose a monarch bcs his name literally means "King's Meadow" or "King's wood" (funny, ik) and monachs rely on meadows filled with milkweed for survival.

Originally, Euploea mulciber was gonna be for Barty, due to the butterfly common name being striped blue crow, perfect for the only Ravenclaw death eater, right? But I also knew from the start the the name has Mulciber in it... It was a tough choice. But in the end I made them toxic yaoi so... Both!

For Harry I chose that one instead of the same I chose for his father because the name sounds similar to Lily but it's not related in any way to the word Lilium in Latin and instead it means 'tiny' which is nice since he's Lily's baby and also he's short due to the lack of food growing up. Say 'thank you for the malnutrition Dursleys!'

Talking about Lily, for her I picked a red Lily beetle, like its name says, It often feeds on flowers from the species Lilium and also Fritillaria. Guess who is also a Lily beetle? Go on, I'll give you three tries... Yeah, you know who. Well, not that one, the other one lol.

And to finish the circle, I choose a European stag beetle for James. Which like its name says, has antlers like a stag, super cool, I love when beetles do that and btw, all the beetles from I picked for the potters are red. Nice.
