that’s a lot of words to say “that’s gay” with. fate has taken up residence in you.

it’s actually not that many because “that’s gay” is the conclusion to that analysis. it is necessary to write what i do because there are a lot of nuances to archer and cu and how they feel about each other. this post doesn’t begin to describe them. there is like, proooobably no other couple like them in the fate series. like, there is a major difference between them and, let’s say, osakabehime and musashi. or jalter and salter. or lu bu and chen gong.

you want “that many”? then you’re gonna have to listen to me talk about how cu is the embodiment of what archer desires in the sense that he’s a hero who fulfilled his dream with zero regrets as to how it ended and all the sacrifice it took to achieve it because cu chulainn will never be anyone but himself and his dream of heroism was made knowing perfectly well how it would end and stuck with it when that very same end came. however, archer also cannot abide that because no matter how much he admires the strength he doesn’t have, it still pisses him the fuck off because why the fuck would anyone ever look forward to a life that will end in a bloody and lonely death. archer had one, and he learned to hate it when he started dealing it too. he thinks that lancer’s life was awful and unfair because archer fundamentally is a person who wants to make others happy and the idea that someone would subject themselves to that much pain and he can’t save them because 1) it already happened so he can’t stop it and 2) it was a martyrdom that someone else had to go through instead of him, is infuriating to him.

but at the same time, lancer cannot approve of how archer abandoned his pride and calls his own efforts worthless and wrong. archer doesn’t use his bow in direct combat even though he’s supposed to be the heroic spirit of the bow. a weapon is a warrior’s pride, and the fact that archer refuses to bring out the symbol, the pinnacle of his deeds and his ideals, is baffling to lancer so their fight in unlimited blade works is lancer’s efforts to break through archer’s shell of self-deprecation and force him to use something that will prove archer has any pride as a warrior. and it fails, because archer really at this point has no pride to reclaim because cu chulainn is not the one meant to defeat him. in addition, archer survives gae bolg with a noble phantasm belonging to someone else. at the very end archer would still rather use the pride of someone else to further his own ends, even though ironically rho aias was conjured by unlimited blade works, the very thing that lancer was looking forward to archer using to defeat him. all that does is reinforce that archer has no pride, not even in the reality marble that stores every single weapon archer has ever seen and all the borrowed ideals he’s ever admired.
