I wanted to share some thoughts about line art that has been bothering me for a while. Sometimes, I get an initial idea for something but cant execute it how I'd like. At first my drawing seems satisfactory to me but as it gets more detailed it becomes more bland. How is this possible? no idea. Many of my drawings end up this way, where they are bland to me but interesting to others but never get posted anywhere. Actually I would say this is the majority of my work. I thought that I would post one such drawing I had been working on. It began as an idea. I wanted to do a double card size picture because I didn't have interesting enough backgrounds for my tastes lately. The challenging part of making a picture that is split into 2 parts is making the composition interesting for both. Sometimes this means the whole image is a bit less dynamic than it could be otherwise. The picture in question is this one
I brainstormed several compositions but landed on one that is very simple and guides the eye in both well. This new project is a challenge and I felt like sharing progress was important. Too often I get told I'm very good at what I do when it comes to various hobbies, but behind that it takes a lot of time and iteration that is unseen. Behind every success or good picture is 10 deemed not worthy. Now of course I can keep iterating on this if I wanted and I may or may not get a better result than what I have here, but part of making artwork is working with the marks you make sometimes. I'm sure it will continue to grow into something I can be happy with as I work on it. If it doesn't end up that way, it was in of itself a learning experience and still valuable in that way.
