¤ A Lullaby of Longing ¤
A soft voice. Melodic. Tranquil. Quiet. Strained?
A melody. Soft and reverent. What was that voice? Where was it coming from? Her surroundings felt warm. Comforting. But why did it hurt to feel this? It was familiar. But from where?
Her mismatched blue eyes would blink open slowly. Looking up at the faceless figure that held her. The source of that melancholic voice. Blonde hair and translucent fins lining their shrouded face.
The tiny mutant reached one of her small hands up towards that familiar face. Playing with the whiskers hanging down as that voice kept singing quietly. Then a wetness. Something dripped onto her small cheek and she shivered with the cool feeling.
Where did the voice go? Where was she? It's cold... so cold... What happened to that warmth? No there was a sound. It wasn't silent like usual. She felt the vibrations in her throat. Heard that same melody she'd heard a moment ago being hummed. She hadn't realized she was mimicking it. Curling her axolotl tails close to hug them to her chest. Who was that? Why couldn't she remember? They felt important... Safe...
``What are you humming Z-257?``
Another voice. Colder. Calculating. It made her small body stiffen with unease. Curling up further in the blanket of her own tails.
The smaller creature gave a quiet reply. Afraid. She didn't even know what she had been humming. Why she had been.
``No matter. It's time for your nap.``
Nap time. That's where it came from.. Long ago. She didn't like nap time. She always slept for so long... And things changed whenever she woke up... It didn't usually hurt... Sometimes it did... But usually she would just find new things about herself. Or missing ones she was familiar with... She didn't like it.
She shook her head. Curling up further. She didn't want to sleep. To change again.
A pause. She hated when he was quiet. It never meant anything good. And sure enough, she felt herself suddenly being lifted up by the tail. Harshly. She shrieked. Flailing as she was dangled upside down. Until that green eye came inches away from her good eye. She felt the uncontrollable tremors course through her small frame. Those cold eyes.
``You know better than to argue Z-257... It's just a little prick and then off to dreamland. Remember?``
Dreams. She rarely had them. But when she did they always terrified her. Unsettling horrors and faint memories haunting her subconscious. The most frequent one being torn away from those safe arms. The 6 arms that held her securely being brutally torn away. Leaving her alone in the cold again.
Her small voice was meek, jittery with her trembling.
She was placed back on the white padding of her cell. Forcing her breathing to slow. Holding her small arm out for him. Not meeting his gaze. Then that familiar prick. Something that always made her flinch. Then the drowsiness. The fog creeping into the corners of her vision. Until nothing but darkness surrounded her again.
